Boys hockey: Farmington Tigers find success at Virginia

A weekend of scrimmages produced some promising results for the Farmington boys hockey team.

The Tigers made the 220-mile trip to Virginia, Minn., for a series of scrimmages and came away with a record of 5-0-1.

The team hit the road Friday afternoon and geared up for a busy Saturday in Virginia by defeating Richfield in a pair of scrimmages Friday night in Hoyt Lakes. The 11th and 12th graders came out on top 3-1 in a 30-minute scrimmage and the Farmington ninth and 10th graders won, 2-1.

Saturday’s get-together in Virginia pitted four teams from the metro — Farmington, Richfield, St. Michael-Albertville and New Prague — against northern teams International Falls, Eveleth, Proctor and Virginia.

The Tigers opened with a 2-2 tie against International Falls. The FHS JV followed that up with a 3-2 win over Eveleth’s varsity.

The Farmington varsity wrapped up the tournament with a pair of shutouts, a 4-0 decision over Proctor and a 3-0 blanking of Virginia. Goaltenders Nick Schoening and Austin Krause were each credited with shutouts.

“The weekend went well,” Farmington coach Keith Revels said. “The returning players performed very well and the newcomers proved they belong. We appear to be a much more skilled team and less physical than in years past.”

The Tigers return 15 letter-winners from last year’s team that finished with a record of 7-17-2. The regular season gets under way at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Hastings. The first home game of the season is Dec. 4 against Rosemount at Schmitz-Maki Arena.
