Student column: Music can have a big influence

Music is such a common thing, but sometimes when we are so used to things, we tend to not pay attention to how great it really is.
For example, music has the power to affect your mood. If you hear a sad song, you might become sad or you might connect to what the artist is trying to say through his or her lyrics. Piggybacking off of that idea, when you are in a sad mood, you tend to want to listen to music that is also sad and describes how you feel. When something happy happens in your life, you would most likely want to listen to a song that would match with how you feel. Music is a great thing to go to when you have to deal with different emotions.
Being an athlete, I know how listening to fast, powerful music can get you pumped up for a meet, game, or competition you are preparing for. It seems that the beat and tempo of the music gets your adrenaline running and boosts your energy. In a magazine I read, there was an article on how the song “Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO was the best song to listen to while exercising or to get yourself psyched up to perform. This is because the fast beat of the song makes you want to perform to the best of your ability. Not to mention that just the content of the song makes you feel good about yourself.
While some people like to jam out, some people do the exact opposite. Before a sporting event, some people may listen to calming, relaxing music to get them relaxed and focused on what they are going to be doing. Either way, music can help calm nerves before your athletic performance.
Sometimes when you are listening to a song, a line or phrase in the song really sticks out to you. Kind of like when you are watching a movie and a line in the movie sticks with you even after the movie is over. It’s that one line you keep going back to over and over again. In a way, it kind of becomes your “signature” quote. For example: “I’m no beauty queen, I’m just beautiful me.” from Who Says by Selena Gomez. This quote seems so simple, but when you think about it, it really is true. Not everyone is model material, but we are all beautiful, all in our own way.
Another line comes from Lucy Hale’s I’ll make you Believe: “I’ll make you believe in me, I can be what you want me to be. Tonight is the night, where I make you see that I can be anything.”
To me, this says that when people doubt you, you are going to prove them wrong and you’re going to show them just what they said you couldn’t do. Music can really make an impact and you, and it’s a great thing to turn to for any occasion.
