The Farmington wrestling team competed in back-to-back triangulars last week and both played out in similar fashion.
On Thursday night, the Tigers opened their home meet with a 32-25 victory over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf/Pemberton. They then began the second dual against fifth-ranked (Class 2A) Scott West with four wins in five matches before dropping the final nine matches in a 45-20 defeat.
A night later at Irish Gym in Rosemount, the Tigers began their second triangular is as many days by winning 10 of 14 matches in a 59-20 rout of East Ridge. The closing match started well with Tiger wrestlers winning five of six matches, but the Irish closed the dual with victories in six of eight matches to lock up a 40-23 decision.
Farmington coach Chad Olson was pleased with the 2-2 week considering injuries forced his team to forfeit two weights in each match.
“We wrestled well. To be able to win two duals giving up 12 points to each team says a lot about how well we are wrestling,” he said. “We hope to have one of them filled by Friday.”
Kyle Benjamin (11-2) returned to the lineup and went 4-0 last week with two decisions and two technical falls. Jamin LeDuc and Taylor Venz each went 3-0, improving LeDuc’s record to 22-1 and Venz’s to 29-2.
Matt Rustad (19-12) went 3-1 on the week and Godfrey Mpetey, Brayden Chapman (18-12), Joey Liden and Jamie Scavone each won twice. Joe Hoeve lost two one-point decisions to ranked wrestlers on Thursday, but came back to record a pin and a major decision on Friday. His record is now 18-11.
Trevor Frost added his first career victory with a pin against East Ridge.
The Tigers are back in action tomorrow at the Lakeville North Invitational. Next Friday they travel to Zimmerman High School for a triangular against Zimmerman and Anoka.
