A 50-year-old Rosemount woman faces felony charges of criminal vehicular operation after a Friday night accident in which she lost control in a roundabout at Highway 3 and 190th Street and hit another car head on.
The woman, Elizabeth Dawn Nelson, was seriously hurt in the accident. Three others received minor injuries.
According to a Minnesota State Patrol report, Nelson was driving south on Highway 3 when she entered the roundabout. She went over the curb, hit a sign and drove into oncoming traffic, where she ran into a Honda CR-V.
According to a complaint filed Tuesday in the Dakota County Attorney’s office, Nelson smelled strongly of alcohol when police talked to her after the accident. She looked dazed and was unable to complete full sentences. She refused to take field sobriety tests.
The passenger in Nelson’s car told police she and Nelson were at a Rosemount bar and she had tried to stop Nelson from driving. She said Nelson was driving faster and faster and would not stop.
Nelson was in the Dakota County jail Tuesday and had her first court appearance that morning on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Nelson was taken to Fairview Ridges Hospital following the accident, as was her passenger. Neither of the two individuals in the other vehicle was transported to the hospital.
Nelson has been charged with three counts of criminal vehicular operation resulting in bodily harm. One of those charges has a maximum sentence of three years and a maximum fine of $10,000. The others have a maximum sentence of one year and a maximum fine of $3,000. She has also been charged with driving while impaired.
