The Farmington girls tennis team opened the season by winning eight out of a possible 18 matches and claiming at least one round in each of the six flights at the Mound Invitational Doubles Tournament Monday morning at Mound-Westonka High School.

The threesome of Brooke Searles, Sydney Geibe, and Casey Peroutky turned in the best showing, tying for first in the sixth flight with a record of 2-1. Kristy Maguire and Danielle McCarthy also went 2-1 in flight No. 3, coming from behind to force a third set tiebreaker they eventually won 10-8. The performance earned them second-place medalist honors.

The action gave coach Jack Olwell a chance to see the progress of his players after just a week of practice, and a chance to see what his squad needs to work on before hosting the Tiger Tournament tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.

"I thought we had a good day at Mound, but saw certain things that need work — serving, and volleying — but our games picked up as the day progressed," Olwell said.

Olwell's No. 1 doubles team of Jaco Burke and Bre Thompson went 1-2 after dropping a tight 6-7, 4-6 match to Mound. The doubles teams of Kelly Willenbring and Lauren Wander, Anna Findsen and Rachel Herme and Crystal Clemens and Maggie Rudorfer all finished 1-2. Clemens and Rudorfer missed second place after dropping a 9-11 tiebreaker.

Shakopee won the meet 15-13 over runner-up Mound, while Farmington was third with eight points and Bloomington Kennedy fourth with zero points.
