Farmington residents will have some choices to make next Tuesday.

The eight-candidate race for Independent School District 192’s three vacant school board seats has gotten the most attention locally but voters will also have a chance to cast ballots for county commissioners, U.S. Senators and state Supreme Court associate justices when they go to the polls for a Sept. 9 primary.

Farmington voters will choose three of the eight school board candidates on the ballot. The top six finishers will advance to the Nov. 4 general election. It’s the first time in recent memory the district has held a primary.

This year’s early vote was triggered because the district has more than twice as many candidates as available seats.Current school board chair Julie McKnight is the only incumbent defending her seat. She is joined on the ballot by Farmington residents Tim Burke, Carol Kappes, Jim Peroutky, Kimberlee Simones, Julie Singewald, Veronica Walter and Bruce Westover.

Other races

The other local election on Tuesday’s primary ballot is for Dakota County Commissioner in District 1. In that race incumbent Joe Harris is being challenged by Farmington resident Craig Altendorfer and Hastings residents Dean Birnstengel and Doug Riles.

Voters can also cast ballots for associate justices in Supreme Court District 3 (Paul H. Anderson, Alan Lawrence Nelson and Tim Tingelstad) and District 4 (Jill Clark, F. Richard Gallo Jr., Lorie Skjerven Gildea and Deborah Hedlund).

There will be partisan votes Tuesday for three of the parties with candidates in the U.S. Senate race. Republicans can choose between Norm Coleman and Jack Shepard; Democrats can choose among Alve Erickson, Prisciilla Lord Faris, Rob Fitzgerald, Al Franken, “Dick” Franson, Bob Larson and Olé Savior; Independence Party members can choose among Kurt Michael Anderson, Dean Barkley, Bill Dahn, Darryl Stanton, Jack Uldrich, Stephen Williams and Doug Williams.
