Verna Josephine "Jo" Fisher, died March 7 at her home in Farmington Community Assisted Living.

Born March 14, 1918, she was raised in Morgantown, W.Va., where she married Vernon Jacob Fisher in 1947. He preceded her in death in 2009.

Jo Berry graduated from West Virginia University in 1947 with a degree in music education, funded in part with the G.I. Bill, honoring her service in the U.S. Women's Army Corps in World War II. Jo taught preschool at the West End Neighborhood House in Wilmington, Del., during the 1960s. She directed the choir at Limestone Presbyterian Church for over 20 years, retiring when she moved with her husband to California in 1977.

In California, Jo was active in Eastern Star and the Gustine Presbyterian Church. Since moving to Farmington in 2004, she has been active in Farmington Lutheran Church. Jo donated her body to the Bequest Program of the University of Minnesota Medical School.

She is survived by daughters, Carol Mathieson of Canton, Mo., and Cathy (Gary) Johnson of Farmington; son Barry (Fran) Fisher of Aurora, Colo.; grandchildren Trevor (Jennifer) and Ryan Johnson: Adam and Megan Fisher; Kristina (Chris) Darnell and great-granddaughter, Brinegar Darnell, many nieces, nephews, and step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters and brother, and her son-in-law and grandson Robert and Andrew Mathieson.

A memorial service will be held at Farmington Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. March 17. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Farmington Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.
