Column: Dakota County Fair? That's Farmington style
Dust fills the air. The aroma of frying corn dogs and exhaust mix in a pungent, heady scent. My yellow Dakota County Fair t-shirt sticks to my back under the hot sun. Engines grind, metal crunches as ancient bumpers collide, and the crowd cheers. Everyone is yelling for their favorite driver, and enjoying the demolition derby, a once-a-year treat.

Column: Finally a reason to get excited
This is a big week for sports fans. Nearly everywhere you look it seems there is another opportunity to cheer on your favorite team, or at least a team in which you’re willing to feign some baseline level of interest as an excuse to sit on the couch while drinking beer and possibly shouting obscenities at people who almost certainly can’t hear you.

Column: It’s time to face a harsh reality
When you spend a lot of time on a bicycle, people tend to expect you to have a certain affinity for Lance Armstrong. At least, that’s what I gather based on the number of people over the years who have yelled “Way to go, Lance!” or “Nice one, Lance!” or “Get out of the road, stupidface!” as I ride past their yard or their car.

In a way, running a 5K is like getting through sixth grade: it takes perseverance. Dodge Middle School principals and teachers know that, too. It’s not easy running a 5K, and it’s certainly not easy to make the transition from elementary school to middle school. Yet somehow, the DMS sixth graders managed to do both last week.
