There is no shortage of treasured holiday traditions. Every year we gather with the same family members and eat the same foods. We listen to the same six Christmas songs on a loop at every single store while we wait in interminable lines because we put off all of our shopping until the last minute.

Column: Sorry to see these lights go out
I learned this week that one of my favorite Christmas light displays is going away. It’s making me a little bit sad. Not a lot. You won’t find me blubbering in the corner. That would be weird. It’s just making me a little misty. Deep down inside. Outside I’m still as tough and manly as ever.

Column: Mary’s secret secondhand pact
With the turkey carved and mashed potatoes decimated, it’s time to turn to the colorful store ads and plan our holiday shopping. According to a Gallup poll, the average adult is spending $770 this year on gifts. I find this figure astounding. I just sold my conversion van to a teenager this fall for $850. The idea that one person spends almost as much on Christmas gifts as another spends on a van to get to work is unthinkable.

Column: Great to have Dew Days downtown
The biggest day of the year in Farmington is almost here. No, not Christmas or city-wide clean-up day, although those are close seconds. The most exciting annual event in Farmington is the Kiss the Pig contest. For one brief, shining moment, a Farmington dignitary smacks lips with a piglet in front of the entire town. The high school principal, a Lutheran minister, the fire chief or someone else of prominence wins the honor every year.

Column: This is the season for giving thanks
Thanksgiving is next week, and as usual, I still don’t have a turkey. Shoving a turkey into my freezer is almost impossible because my freezer shelves are ridiculously close together. I can cram large flat items in there, like an eight pound bag of soup from Kwik Trip, but bumpy things like a turkey carcass pose a challenge.
