Looking at the dry, yellow stalks of corn in many Dakota County fields, it might be hard to think of the flood waters that stood in many of those same fields early in the 2012 growing season. But the Minnesota Department of Agriculture remembers those days. That’s why the MDA is accepting applications for flood assistance from agricultural producers in 15 Minnesota counties, including Dakota County.

When Mike Slavik was first elected to the Hastings City Council in 2006, his parents breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, that political science degree he’d earned at St. John’s University was going to be used. Well, now Slavik is using that degree full time. He was sworn last week in as the new Dakota County Commissioner for District 1.
