South St. Paul didn’t field an American Legion baseball team this year. It wouldn’t have been an issue, except apparently nobody told Farmington’s schedule makers. Which is how the local Legion team found itself waiting Tuesday for a game that was never going to happen.

The Farmington Legion Post 189 baseball team was flying high after Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Faribault. Coming off a second-place finish at the Grand Rapids Tournament, Post 189 got a complete-game effort from pitcher Drew Hegseth as it improved to 7-4 on the season.

The second night Phil and Tony Marvets owned their new Farmington restaurant there was a fight at the bar. It was a big enough disturbance that Phil had to sit down with police and review security video of the incident. And it was exactly the kind of thing the brothers hope to discourage as they try to transform the business, a former American Legion and, briefly, a sports bar called Tailgaters.

I don’t expect everyone in Farmington or Rosemount to drop all of their weekend plans just to attend a Memorial Day ceremony. I do, however, ask that you take a minute, sometime over the weekend, just to think about those who have died for our freedom, those who have died defending the freedom of others, and those who have served our country but have now passed away.
