Editorial: Farmington salary investigation outcome was predictable
If anyone had asked us, we probably could have told them back at the beginning what would come of the city of Farmington’s investigation of raises received over the years by several city employees. The raises, while in some cases seemingly outsized, were given in accordance with city policy.

Farmington foreclosures on the decline in 2012
A downward slide isn’t always a bad thing, especially when it comes to the number of foreclosures in Farmington. In the case of foreclosures, fewer is better. It’s a downward trend Farmington assistant city planner Tony Wippler is glad to see.

Farmington's Venz capped off season with a state championship Saturday
Taylor Venz has been dreaming about winning a state championship for the last three years. At least, he’s been trying to. That’s why he wrote “state champion” on his pillow case with a Sharpie. He wanted that goal to be the last thing he saw every night before he went to bed.

Girls soccer: Tiger defense shines in win, tie
Ball-control, defense and goalkeeping have all been strengths for the Farmington girls soccer team this season. When the Tigers have struggled, it’s been because of their inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities. That was the case Saturday afternoon as a sub-.500 Rochester Mayo team came to Tiger Stadium and escaped 80 minutes of regulation and two overtimes with a scoreless tie.

Judge says punishment of child was not extreme
Charges have been dropped against a 34-year-old Farmington man accused last year of abusing his 9-year-old son. A Jan. 3 order from judge Martha Simonett granted Max McCullough’s request that the malicious punishment charge be dropped due to a lack of probable cause. McCullough was charged last October with hitting his son with a belt, allegedly because the boy had acted up at school. Though he initially denied hitting his son, McCullough later admitted to police that he had struck the boy because he had refused to do work in school and had been disrespecting his teachers. That story didn’t change when the matter got to court. According to the order, McCullough admitted hitting his son on the buttocks and thigh as punishment for fighting in school. He was reportedly “extremely remorseful and ashamed” of what he had done. Metzen’s order also points out that the Minnesota Supreme Court has not outlawed all corporal punishment by parents and “has refused to draw a bright line about what is acceptable and what is not.” In this case, Metzen ruled, it “does not appear fair and reasonable” that McCullough stand trial on the gross misdemeanor charge. Metzen recommended McCullough attend a parenting program and talk to a therapist.
