Finally, progress for downtown lot
The Farmington Business Association is going to have to find another place to put up its community Christmas tree. The vacant lot on Third Street, where the tree has been placed for the past few years, won’t be vacant much longer. By this fall, a 3,000-square-foot building will be taking up the space.

Your weekend: Farmington’s Dazzle Day is Saturday
It's a full weekend of activity in Farmington, with opportunities to help the community, help yourself and have a little fun. Start Thursday with a Red Cross blood drive at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Then check out some live music, get some deals at Farmington's Dazzle Day celebration and eat some pancakes at a benefit breakfast to help a Farmington family that lost its home to fire. If you haven't picked up a Christmas tree, you've got one more weekend to stop by the Boy Scouts' lot on Akin Road.

Editorial: Progress in sight downtown
For more than two decades the property known to many as the McVicker lot has sat vacant in a prime spot downtown Farmington. For many of those years maintenance on the property was minimal. The grass got mowed, but that was about it. Except for a colorful mural on its south side, there was little reason to pay attention to it.

Dazzle Day returns this weekend, with or without snow
The lack of snow might make a snow sculpture contest a little harder, but Dazzle Day organizer David Hartnett is far from disheartened. In fact, it’s kind of getting his creative juices flowing. Farmington’s Dazzle Day committee has looked at several options for making the sculpture contest happen — from transporting ice shavings from the Schmitz-Maki Arena to downtown to using marshmallows. There are a lot of silly ideas out there, but then again, that’s kind of what getting in the spirit of things is all about.

For Pellicci, moving to a new location feels like leaving home
After 18 years in nearly the same location, Mark Pellicci has mixed feelings about the changes taking shape for his family’s hardware store. He’s excited to have a new space, excited to finally own his own building. But he also feels a little bit like a college student packing up and moving away from home.

Column: The newspaper gods are on my side
Here’s the thing about holiday weeks: there is usually far too much to do, in far too little time. Don’t get me wrong. I’m gearing up for a nice, long four-day weekend with family and a couple hundred of my closest Black Friday shopping friends, just like anybody else.

Column: Gardening challenges await
Well, it’s that time of the year again: time to square off with the yard. When I moved to St. Paul a year ago, I was thrilled I was going to have a yard for the first time. To be able to plant a garden. To buy pretty flowers and make flower beds outside the house.
