Column: Adjusting to life without sirens
When I lived in town, I used to count sirens at night. Weird as that might sound, I did it, whether I wanted to or not. I’d hear the sirens in the summer especially, when I would have my windows open in the evenings. At times, I’d wake from a sound sleep. I’d lie there, listening, and counting.

Column: The wonders of technology
When I got my new car last August, the salesman told me my car had Bluetooth capabilities. Now, I’m not completely technology-literate, so I figured out that meant I’d be able to connect my cell phone to my car, and I’d be able to go hands free while talking to people on the road.

Column: Transitioning to a ‘dog person’
Puppies are funny creatures. I got my first kitten for my 10th birthday. I was 23 when my dad had to take her to the vet for the last time. Michke, my last cat, was my companion for 14 years. Suffice it to say, I understand cats. If I’d been asked, even three months ago, I’d fall under the “Cat Person” category. But now, Rissa’s come to our house, and she’s really messing with that whole label.

Farmington woman creates cards with personality
Heather Zappo calls her company Id & Ego, so it’s probably appropriate that she sees elements of her own personality in all of the cards and decorations she creates. Zappo, a Farmington resident, creates greeting cards with pictures of lobsters or flowers, gift tags with party-hat-wearing skulls and bookmarks with colorful “bookworms.”

Column: Good thing I didn’t make resolutions
Just out of curiosity Monday, I pulled up a column I wrote the first week of 2011. In it, I decided I was already too far into the new year – it was published on Jan. 6 – to set any resolutions. I thought instead I’d make me some pledges. And it’s a good thing I didn’t make those resolutions, because I’d have a heck of a lot to do in the next week. First off, I had pledged to learn to play cribbage, because The Beau likes to play Cribbage. Whoops. Didn’t master that one yet. File under “To Do in 2012.”

Column: Memory full; please delete content
I got this message on my cell phone over the weekend: Memory full. Please delete content. It came from my text message inbox. It seems I’d gotten so many messages my phone simply ran out of memory. I know how it feels. I’m feeling that way myself these days.

Column: It’s all yours for the claiming
In honor of my first significant outdoor bike ride of the year, I’d like to take a moment to talk about a true pioneer in the bicycling world. Dan Henry, who died earlier this month at the age of 99, has made a number of important contributions to bicycling culture. He did early work on suspension systems for bicycles, and he created something called the sling saddle, which is a little like a hammock for your bike.

Column: Dew Days went by quickly
Where did it go? I’m at my desk. It’s Monday. I’m looking out the window (again) and I’m looking at Oak Street, just the same as it is every Monday. And I wonder, where did Dew Days go?

Finally getting a handle on things
I’ve decided that whoever came up with the idea of putting handles on bags was a genius. Since I’ve started commuting to work, I’ve especially gained an appreciation for bags with handles. Especially the sturdy ones. Because every day, it seems I drag anywhere from two to six out the door with me.

Column: My first home, be it ever so humble
I remember, years and years ago already, sitting through a Farmington City Council meeting (one of probably thousands) and watching the presentation for a new townhome development. I looked at the layout of the development. More importantly, I heard the price range and I thought, “Hey, that’s the one I’m going to buy.”

Plenty worth remembering in 86 years of life
Norman Russell is a little fuzzy on a few of the details of his life. After 86 years, there’s a lot to keep track of. Ask him about his life after high school and he’ll think for a while, then talk about working in dry cleaning for a couple of years. But details are hard to come by.

Column: A big opportunity missed
Wednesday was a big day for big-time college football programs. In early-morning gatherings, high school seniors nationwide formally declared their intention to play for Michigan or Ohio State or Florida or whatever other schools have a high-profile team these days. I don’t watch much football. Is Princeton still good?

FHS students present Fiddler on the Roof April 26-28
When Farmington High School needed a director for the spring musical, Fiddler on the Roof, assistant principal Kerry Timmerman knew who to ask. Timmerman went back to his own high school director, Mark Rud. A resident of Owatonna, Rud now drives up to Farmington for the play practices, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
