Author talks to Boeckman Middle School students on being creative
Look around a room. Everything in it was someone’s idea, before it became an actual object. Someone had to think of it, someone had to see a need for it. And someone had to build it.

Early assessment is meant to jump start learning
The back-to-school process is kicking off a little bit earlier than usual this year at Farmington elementary schools. With two days of literacy assessments next week, Farmington teachers hope to get a head start on the new year. The idea is to bring in all elementary school students before the start of the school year so teachers can get a better idea of their literacy level – who needs help, and who might need some additional challenges.

Column: Lessons from the gambling world
It would be an overstatement for me to describe myself as a gambling expert. Or to say I am knowledgeable in the ways of the gambling arts. Or, I guess, that I have any idea how to improve your chances of winning money while gambling.

Longtime local legislator Walter Klaus has died
When Walter Klaus celebrated his 100th birthday last April, the topic of redistricting came up. In another gathering it might have been idle political banter, but for Klaus it was serious business. He had some ideas.

Editorial: What is a little peace and quiet worth?
We’re not opposed to the idea of introducing a noise ordinance in the city of Farmington. Everybody deserves a life of relative peace and quiet if that’s what they’re after. If there is an easy way to accomplish that, then by all means go ahead.

Relay for Life’s a tough job, but well worth the work for Endres
Lisa Endres didn’t know quite how much work she was signing up for when she agreed to serve as chair of Farmington’s Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. But she also had no idea how much reward she would get from the process.

Bit by bit, volt by volt, extension cord by comically oversized extension cord, electric cars are gaining traction on American roads. As gas prices have climbed and technology has improved, the idea of ditching fossil fuels has become more acceptable to drivers.

Our favorite things: Nathan’s favorite 2012 stories include parades, horses and changing ideas about education
We have written a lot of stories over the past year. At a rough estimate, we filled more than 1,500 pages with news about Farmington. That’s a lot of stories we have worked to prepare, then sent out into the world. And while some of them were relatively small things, others have stuck with us over the months. This is a look back at those stories, our favorites from 2012.

Student column: A to-do list to get students through summer
Summer is finally here and all of us high-schoolers are so excited. If you’re like me you’ve probably already of out of ideas for fun, unique stuff to do, right? Here’s a list I came up with to use as my Summer 2012 Bucket List. My friends and I made it our goal to have done almost all of these things by the end of summer. Maybe if you ever get bored, you want to consider doing the same thing.

Editorial: Liquor store decision is disappointing
A few weeks ago in this space we laid out the reasons we thought moving Farmington’s city-owned downtown liquor store to a new location on Highway 3 was a good idea. At the time, it appeared city council members agreed, having voted to direct city administrator David McKnight to prepare a lease for the new location in the Tamarack Ridge shopping center.

Column: Mary’s secret secondhand pact
With the turkey carved and mashed potatoes decimated, it’s time to turn to the colorful store ads and plan our holiday shopping. According to a Gallup poll, the average adult is spending $770 this year on gifts. I find this figure astounding. I just sold my conversion van to a teenager this fall for $850. The idea that one person spends almost as much on Christmas gifts as another spends on a van to get to work is unthinkable.

Column: A sort-of exciting proposal
Language is an ever-evolving thing. Our fast-moving culture requires some terms fall out of favor while others arise to take their place. Just as the modern teenager likely has little idea what a phonograph or a talkie might be, there are things we need words for today that never would have occurred to us even just a few years ago -- like email or smartphone or Bieber.

Farmington's annual cookie walk fundraiser has become a holiday tradition for the Jones family
Mike Jones knows what it’s like to be a deployed soldier worrying about your family. When he was in the Army he served tours in the first Gulf War and in Bosnia. His wife, Jennie, has a pretty good idea what it’s like to be a military family, too. Her father served, and she grew up moving from base to base. That’s at least part of the reason the Farmington family has become a big fan of the Farmington Yellow Ribbon Network’s annual cookie walk fundraiser.

Residents can help plan future growth
The Met Council is soliciting comments as part of a process it’s calling Thrive MSP 2040, an effort to update its long-term vision for transit, growth and just about everything else about future development in the region. The federally-mandated plan that results will ultimately filter down to affect comprehensive development plans in individual cities like Farmington.

If the Farmington School District’s first strategic plan was all about getting everybody on the same page, the message of the update approved Monday seems to be that it’s OK to go your own way, at least within reason.
