Column: Great to have Dew Days downtown
The biggest day of the year in Farmington is almost here. No, not Christmas or city-wide clean-up day, although those are close seconds. The most exciting annual event in Farmington is the Kiss the Pig contest. For one brief, shining moment, a Farmington dignitary smacks lips with a piglet in front of the entire town. The high school principal, a Lutheran minister, the fire chief or someone else of prominence wins the honor every year.

Mary's column: Dew Days and Democracy at work
Dew Days has come and gone, and despite the trials of weather, the celebration was a resounding success for Farmington. People enjoying cheese curds, live music and iconic cans of Mountain Dew packed the downtown streets.

Column: Making plans for summer travel
With the Fourth of July in the rearview mirror and the weather a bit more comfortable, I decided it’s time start seriously planning a summer vacation.

At work I often teach an introductory computer class for freshmen. During the computer security unit, one of the topics I cover is hackers.

Column: Dakota County Fair? That's Farmington style
Dust fills the air. The aroma of frying corn dogs and exhaust mix in a pungent, heady scent. My yellow Dakota County Fair t-shirt sticks to my back under the hot sun. Engines grind, metal crunches as ancient bumpers collide, and the crowd cheers. Everyone is yelling for their favorite driver, and enjoying the demolition derby, a once-a-year treat.

Column: Making a fresh start for fall
This morning the weather took a strangely cool twist for August. I woke up to 46 degrees for the first time in months. Dewdrops lingered on the lush green of my lawn. Buttery gentle sunlight sparkled on the dew. A busy day lay ahead preparing syllabi for the new courses I’m teaching this fall. It almost seemed like nature responded to this change of pace, scaling back from the poolside heat to a fresh autumn cool.

Column: The fate of schools and video stores
Last week I drove past the Video Update store in Eagan. There were huge “Going Out of Business” signs plastered the windows. I considered stopping to pick up some $1.99 DVDs, but I still haven’t watched the stack of DVDs I bought when the last video store in Farmington went out of business.

Column: The college dream is still alive
We are just getting into the swing of the school year, but high school juniors and seniors are already planning for a fresh start at college. Yet with tuition prices rising enormously in the past few years, traditional-age students and their parents are worried about paying for it all.

Column: This is the season for giving thanks
Thanksgiving is next week, and as usual, I still don’t have a turkey. Shoving a turkey into my freezer is almost impossible because my freezer shelves are ridiculously close together. I can cram large flat items in there, like an eight pound bag of soup from Kwik Trip, but bumpy things like a turkey carcass pose a challenge.

Column: Mary’s secret secondhand pact
With the turkey carved and mashed potatoes decimated, it’s time to turn to the colorful store ads and plan our holiday shopping. According to a Gallup poll, the average adult is spending $770 this year on gifts. I find this figure astounding. I just sold my conversion van to a teenager this fall for $850. The idea that one person spends almost as much on Christmas gifts as another spends on a van to get to work is unthinkable.

Column: Farmington’s top 10 coolest things
News programs in December and January are usually stuffed with top 10 lists. Although these are a handy way to fill a little space in a column, I haven’t resorted to them yet. The key word here is “yet.”

Column: The coolest things in town
News programs in December and January are usually stuffed with Top Ten lists. Although they are a handy way to fill a little space in a column, until two weeks ago I hadn’t yet resorted to them. Then for the first time ever, I decided to cull the best of Farmington into one giant list, which I branded the Top Ten Coolest Things in Farmington during 2012. In my last column we explored a few of these cool things.

Column: Office legends
For over a decade I worked in information technology, mainly as a software engineer. Last week when someone told me about the software developer who was busted for outsourcing his own job to China so he could watch cat videos during the work day, I thought it was a joke.

Column: Hiding inside until spring arrives
This week we had a beautiful day, 35 degrees and sunny. You know it’s been a long winter when 35 degrees seems beautiful and just seeing the sun feels invigorating. I was so invigorated that I said to one of my co-workers it seems like spring is here.

Column: Donuts and driving mittens
The winter weather is pressing on in Farmington, and even though I think it should be spring, Mother Nature is not cooperating. I’ve learned a wonderful antidote to the cold is a steaming cup of coffee and a sweet bar

Column: Bark and Baldy’s Barbecue
A new restaurant is coming to Farmington, and it’s sure to spice up the food scene in town. Baldy’s Barbecue is opening its second location here downtown, inside the former Burger King location. We are in dire need of more choice of cuisine in Farmington.

Column: Need for Speed? Mary finds a way to impose limits
It’s been a snowy week in Farmington. Returning geese are flocking to the ponds and lakes, but since the water is still frozen from our extended winter, the birds are awkwardly standing on the ice instead of swimming.
