Having a good story to tell is one thing. Being able to tell that story on paper, to other people, is something entirely different. Learning how to tell a story to others was part of the motivation behind last week’s Young Authors Workshop for Farmington middle school students.

Book Report: Take your pick, there's something for everyone
Someone on your holiday gift list who likes to read books by and about characters in the upper Midwest? There’s a plethora in that category this year. Column: This is the season for giving thanks
Thanksgiving is next week, and as usual, I still don’t have a turkey. Shoving a turkey into my freezer is almost impossible because my freezer shelves are ridiculously close together. I can cram large flat items in there, like an eight pound bag of soup from Kwik Trip, but bumpy things like a turkey carcass pose a challenge.

Student column: What does your writing say about you?
Writing is something everybody does almost every day of their lives. Usually people don’t pay much attention to what their writing looks like. But what most people don’t know is that your writing can tell a little bit about your personality.

There is something important happening this summer at North Trail Elementary School. Kids, freed from the burden of assignments and homework and tests, are coming to school and checking out books. They’re reading, and they’re having fun doing it.

Editorial: Libraries are changing with the times
It’s easy to overlook your local library. It’s there. It has books. If you fill out a form and carry a card with you, it will let you take those books home with you for a little while. It’s, you know, nice. Easy.

Editorial: Farmington came through with toys
Just a few weeks ago, police chief Brian Lindquist was in a difficult situation. He expected a big demand for this year’s Toys for Town drive, and with the collection period moving quickly toward its end, donations had been slow to come in. There appeared to be a very real possibility the department’s efforts would fall short for the first time in memory.

Editorial: Happy to be in Farmington
As we put the finishing touches on this week’s Independent many of our readers are probably gathering with family and friends to celebrate the holiday season in their own particular way. They are eating big meals and sharing gifts. They are enjoying togetherness and, we hope, generally taking stock of the ways in which they are fortunate.
