Advantages to a wedding video
In a financial climate where most people are pinching pennies, it comes as no surprise that many engaged couples seek ways to cut costs with regard to their weddings. Some couples are undecided whether certain components of their wedding are necessary.

Case of the burning motorcycle stumps Farmington police
A motorcycle fire at the car wash on Highway 3 has Farmington police a little perplexed. The facts are simple enough: around 10 a.m. on July 27, a middle-aged white man drove a 1981 Suzuki motorcycle into a stall at the car wash. Video from the car wash shows the man was washing the motorcycle when it burst into flames.

Column: The end of the fairy tale
I’m not proud of the fact, but sometime early Monday evening I found myself reading a newspaper story about the end of the marriage between former Gopher basketball player Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian, who so far as I can tell rose to prominence for having a large rear end and making a video of an activity most people choose not to broadcast to a world audience.

Column: Play nice, everyone
Sunday mornings in my family are basically the definition of chill. Grab a mug full of coffee, sit back, and watch Good Morning America. Usually on Sundays all they talk about is shopping deals, trends and video highlights. So this past Sunday when GMA started talking about how unsportsmanlike conduct is on the rise, my jaw dropped. How could something like this be on the rise? It took me a few seconds to realize that you actually see it all the time. It just depends on whether you do anything about it.

Schools will test a new style of teaching
Dan Pickens is excited about a new style of teaching mathematics in Farmington Schools. Pickens, a science, technology, engineering and mathematics specialist, has been an enthusiastic supporter of the new method, called inverted classes or, more commonly, flipped classes. He’s helping bring it on board next year at all district schools.

Editorial: Proceed with caution with camera network
Talking this week about the security cameras Farmington police have at their disposal, sergeant Jim Constantineau made a reference to Big Brother, the all-seeing government from George Orwell’s 1984. It’s an image that might come to readers’ minds as they read the story. For many, the idea police could be watching even when they’re not on patrol will be distasteful no matter the scale.

YouTube has become a study tool at FHS
Teaching 450 students at once might seem like a somewhat labor intensive process, but Farmington High School math teacher Daniel Pickens says that’s not so. And prepping 450 juniors for the annual Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment tests this week was kind of a breeze, too.

Mary Lebens: A yoga adventure as cold sets in
As the biting cold set in last week, I struggled walking the block from my house to the gym. The wind caught the narrow strip of exposed flesh between my boots and my track pants with searing pain. Sticking to those New Year’s resolutions about exercising more is hard when the weather is actively trying to kill you every time you leave the house.

ARES students have a history at the hop
Akin Road Elementary held its 15th annual Sock Hop Feb. 3. The event is not a fundraiser, ARES Parent Teacher Partnership president Mary Treakle said. There is a silent auction and funds from that part of the event go to the PTP – this year’s proceeds are helping to bring technology into the classrooms – but fundraising isn’t the point of the event. Fun is.

Column: Appreciating the great outdoors
The recent balmy weather belies that fact we are halfway through October. Hopefully it will hold for one more weekend. I want to make an escape to Duluth before the year is over. I want to walk the rocky shores of our very own inland ocean, and hear the waves crashing against the boulders.

There are 54 surveillance cameras posted around the community, giving Farmington police a chance to see things that happen even when they’re not there. The camera system was a large purchase, but it’s come in handy more than once.

Column: Time for a change of seasons
As I write this column, it’s Sunday night and the Minnesota Vikings football team is in the middle of a game against the Bears of Chicago. I call them the Minnesota Vikings football team because the Vikings themselves seem uncertain about the game they’re playing. Maybe they think it’s Ring Around the Rosie. They sure do fall down a lot.

Column: It’s not just Santa making a list
With 2011 coming to its inevitable end, publications both printed and digital are dedicating a lot of space to lists of things. The year-end list is a venerated tradition in the publishing business. Some will claim it dates back to Benjamin Franklin, the editor of one of this country’s first newspapers, who is believed to have published a list of the 10 best Founding Father sex scandals in the 1931 year-end issue of his Pennsylvania Gazette.
