Column: A fishy tale from vacation
I caught the biggest fish of my life five times last week. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t by skill, either. More pure dumb luck, I think.

Column: The great cooling debate
There was a great battle waged last weekend. OK, battle is probably too strong a word. So is skirmish, now that I think about it. I’d say kerfuffle, but that sound a little pretentious.

A few weeks ago in this space we laid out the reasons we thought moving Farmington’s city-owned downtown liquor store to a new location on Highway 3 was a good idea. At the time, it appeared city council members agreed, having voted to direct city administrator David McKnight to prepare a lease for the new location in the Tamarack Ridge shopping center.

Brothers David and Jonathan Bovee are both working on their Eagle Scout
David and Jonathan Bovee are only a year apart, and they have a lot of the same interests. They compete together on the Farmington High School swim team. They even finish each other’s sentences. They have been in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts together for much of their lives, so maybe it makes sense that when it came time to go after the highest honor the Scouts have to offer they are doing that together, too.

You can hear the crack of the bat
In one sense, baseball is a game of numbers, numbers involving runs batted in, earned run averages, singles, two-baggers, homers, attendance. My late friend Dave Goldsmith subscribed to Baseball Digest, several baseball newspapers and even flunked out of a college because he spent his entire freshman year memorizing baseball statistics.

Come Friday, there will be lots of activities going on around town as part of the Dew Days celebration. Among them will be a horse race of sorts. The new event should be a hit – it’s organizer has had a pretty successful run with other events. Tim Carey is one of the original co-chairmen of the celebration now known as Dew Days.
