When there’s a will, there’s a way. That’s how the Farmington Sno Tigers operate when it comes to their annual Special Needs Ride coming up this weekend. There may not be much snow, but the group still plans to carry out the ride.

Wish comes true for Farmington teen
Farmington High School senior Dian Bloom is really looking forward to March 5, but last Friday wasn’t bad, either. Last Friday, Bloom learned she had been given a trip to Bora Bora through Make-A-Wish Minnesota. She received a trip for four that she’ll take later this spring. After March 5, for sure.

Farmington’s Knights of Columbus pancake breakfasts raise money and build community
When you’re cooking for a few hundred people, you tend to work in large quantities. You beat eggs by the dozen, store French toast batter in gallon milk jugs, and warm syrup in coffee urns.

Column: Another week of activity overload
I’ve come to understand there are certain times of the year when I just have to let all of my friends and family know I’ll be missing in action for a few days. Or weeks. It depends.

Column: The coolest things in town
News programs in December and January are usually stuffed with Top Ten lists. Although they are a handy way to fill a little space in a column, until two weeks ago I hadn’t yet resorted to them. Then for the first time ever, I decided to cull the best of Farmington into one giant list, which I branded the Top Ten Coolest Things in Farmington during 2012. In my last column we explored a few of these cool things.

Column: Making Christmas memories
With just under a week until Christmas morning, I’m feeling like I’m not quite ready for the big day. Who am I kidding? I really am not ready for the Christmas season. In any way, shape or form.

North Trail Elementary School Giving Tree stands tall
North Trail Elementary School students and staff are getting that holiday giving spirit, and just in time, too. From now through Friday, Dec. 14, North Trail Elementary will collect gifts of toys for Farmington’s Toys for Town gift drive through its new project, the Giving Tree. Set up in the school lobby, the tree serves as the drop-off point for any toys students or staff would like to donate.

‘Desperate’ time for Toys for Town drive
Farmington police chief Brian Lindquist has a bone to pick with Mother Nature. Sure, Mother Nature has given us some unseasonably warm temperatures, and sure, those warm temperatures are shortening Minnesota’s long winter season. But he believes those same warm temperatures are having a huge effect on Farmington’s Toys for Town toy collection.

Tiger Classic tournament will bring 9,000-plus to Farmington this weekend
Mark Steffes may be kind of tired come next Monday morning. It takes a lot of time, organization and energy to pull off Farmington Traveling Basketball’s annual Tiger Classic tournament. Actually, exhausted might be more like it. Exhausted, but happy.

Parkland named for Farmington's first parks director
Former Farmington parks and recreation director Jim Bell remembers well negotiating the purchase of a large chunk of parkland north of 195th Street, and he remembers the trees that had to be cleared so a pair of ponds could be constructed there, too. He planned the trail system near those ponds, and now all of Farmington can remember his contributions every time they use those trails.

Farmington community gathers to thank its Veterans
Farmington Veterans of Foreign Wars Sypal-Lundgren Post 7662 commander Ron Ersfeld summed up the 2012 Patriotic Day celebration in three simple words: “pretty jam-packed.” And he was right. More than 1,200 free dinners of pork chops and mashed potatoes were served during the Nov. 1 event, and all 800 seats in the recital hall at Farmington High School were filled.

Election season hits high gear
By late this week, it’s a pretty good bet city of Farmington executive assistant Cindy Muller will be ready for a nice, quiet few days off. Because truth be told, she’s been pretty busy around city hall these days. Not only does Muller have to worry about things like attending city council meetings and workshops, but she’s had plenty to do on top of that the past few weeks. She’s got an election to run.
