Book Report: The rise and fall of empires
I met a traveler from an antique land Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert…Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: “My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!” Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The long and level sands stretch far away. —Ozymandias by Percy Shelley

Many people tell the truth. It doesn’t matter how old you are, you are always getting told to tell nothing but the truth. But there always seems to be those little lies that most people seem to say. Usually these lies can also be known as white lies.

Someone on your holiday gift list who likes to read books by and about characters in the upper Midwest? There’s a plethora in that category this year. Book Report: Post-election wrap-up
Now that the election is over I thought I might stir the pot a bit with mention of a new book that’s been receiving attention. It’s “The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court,” by Jeffrey Toobin (Doubleday, $28.95). A writer for the New Yorker magazine, Toobin has written a red hot book about the conflicts between two young movers and shakers, Barack Obama and Supreme Court Justice John Roberts.

Column: Can we demand a recount?
I’ve never been a particularly political person. I vote, obviously, and I know that an electoral college is. But I don’t obsess over things like polls or swing states or knowing who half of the people on my ballot actually are.

Letter: Carpentier understands what makes schools successful
The upcoming Presidential elections have sparked my interest in the candidates on a national level, but I can't forget the local candidates who also make a difference in our everyday lives as well. One race I am particularly interested in is the Farmington School Board, I have two children in our school system and want the best for their future.

Letter: Opponent’s accusations were inaccurate, mayor says
This letter is in response to last week’s letter to the editor from Dave Pritzlaff. Although Mr. Pritzlaff has admitted to some bad math when it comes to when he was a member of the Farmington City Council (2004-2008) he has not corrected the mistake on the flyers he is handing out or on his website. I have been mayor from 2009 until present; I have never missed a city council meeting, EDA meeting or any council workshops.
