Column: The most dangerous holiday
I can’t tell you exactly what I’m going to do Friday. I suspect I’ll go to work for at least a little bit. I’m not sure why, exactly. When calling other people is a big part of your job description, it’s hard to get much done on a day most people take off of work.

When Walter Klaus celebrated his 100th birthday last April, the topic of redistricting came up. In another gathering it might have been idle political banter, but for Klaus it was serious business. He had some ideas.

Student column: Snow shortage: good or bad?
Does anyone else think it’s weird that we’re almost halfway through November and – as of the time I wrote this — it hasn’t snowed yet? I’m surely not complaining that the weather has been nice. I’m not a huge fan of the cold. But that thought just popped into my head the other day and I couldn’t seem to shake it.

Column: Can we demand a recount?
I’ve never been a particularly political person. I vote, obviously, and I know that an electoral college is. But I don’t obsess over things like polls or swing states or knowing who half of the people on my ballot actually are.

Editorial: An important mix of stories
On Saturday afternoon a healthy portion of the greater Farmington community came together to give one family a very special gift. For more than an hour, band members and sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and Boy Scouts traced a parade route around an Empire Township neighborhood, part of a Make-A-Wish gift that just kept growing.

Column: Straight to the (exclamation) point
Punctuation is important in this business. Take away our periods and commas and hyphens and our news stories would be reduced to mostly unintelligible jumbles of letters and spaces. And then the rest of this newspaper would be no better than this column.

Two weeks ago, I wrote about how I hadn’t been in Farmington for, oh, pretty much the entire month of August. Well, Farmington friends, I have good news – I’m back, and I’m back at it.

Column: Looking lived in, little by little
The newspaper business being what it is, it’s hard to know whether I’ll spend the rest of my professional life working in journalism. There are too many variables. For all I know, Facebook will launch a daily newscast next month made up of nothing but photos of babies, food and kittens.

Here it is, almost the end of August, and I’ve hardly spent any of it in Farmington. It’s not that I’ve meant to. It just kind of happened.

You can hear the crack of the bat
In one sense, baseball is a game of numbers, numbers involving runs batted in, earned run averages, singles, two-baggers, homers, attendance. My late friend Dave Goldsmith subscribed to Baseball Digest, several baseball newspapers and even flunked out of a college because he spent his entire freshman year memorizing baseball statistics.
