Column: Mary’s secret secondhand pact
With the turkey carved and mashed potatoes decimated, it’s time to turn to the colorful store ads and plan our holiday shopping. According to a Gallup poll, the average adult is spending $770 this year on gifts. I find this figure astounding. I just sold my conversion van to a teenager this fall for $850. The idea that one person spends almost as much on Christmas gifts as another spends on a van to get to work is unthinkable.

Farmington’s Restwell has been revived as the Farmington Efficiencies apartment complex
The first time Sayeed Haque saw what was then the Restwell Motel, he knew he had a lot of work to do. The roof was in dire need of repairs. The rooms were in rough shape and needed to be renovated. And there were only three tenants, one of whom had to be evicted because she hadn’t been paying her rent.

Column: This is the season for giving thanks
Thanksgiving is next week, and as usual, I still don’t have a turkey. Shoving a turkey into my freezer is almost impossible because my freezer shelves are ridiculously close together. I can cram large flat items in there, like an eight pound bag of soup from Kwik Trip, but bumpy things like a turkey carcass pose a challenge.

Editorial: Libraries are changing with the times
It’s easy to overlook your local library. It’s there. It has books. If you fill out a form and carry a card with you, it will let you take those books home with you for a little while. It’s, you know, nice. Easy.

Book Report: Post-election wrap-up
Now that the election is over I thought I might stir the pot a bit with mention of a new book that’s been receiving attention. It’s “The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court,” by Jeffrey Toobin (Doubleday, $28.95). A writer for the New Yorker magazine, Toobin has written a red hot book about the conflicts between two young movers and shakers, Barack Obama and Supreme Court Justice John Roberts.
