Editorial: School year brings new reasons for vigilance

As this issue of the Farmington Independent reaches mailboxes we are just five days from the start of a new school year. When they’re not busy shopping for new clothes and notebooks, children and teens everywhere are busy trying to cram every last bit of recreation they can into the final hours before they return to structured schedules of school days.

Editorial: ‘Performance’ discussion raises questions

Sometimes, it’s what isn’t said that makes people wonder. The Farmington City Council planned to close a portion of its Aug. 16 business meeting to discuss “performance issues.” When the Independent called into question the legality of closing that meeting, council members decided to address their issues at an Aug. 23 workshop.

Editorial: Response to storm was heartening PressPass

Residents in Farmington’s storm-struck midsection could be excused for feeling a bit traumatized over the weekend. Many awoke early Friday morning to the noisy rumblings and violent winds of a tornado that left more than 120 homes damaged and at least 13 currently unhabitable.

Editorial: Election season is about to get interesting PressPass

The primaries are over, the results are in and election season is about to heat up in Farmington. There were no directly local races on Tuesday’s primary ballot. The closest we came were a three-candidate judicial race in the First District and a competition between two Democrats to take on U.S. Representative John Kline in the Second District.

Editorial: Changing fair is still a good time for all PressPass

The Dakota County Fair is an interesting reflection of a changing community. The fair is still very much an agricultural event. The fairgrounds’ biggest and typically busiest buildings are still those dedicated to animals. There are stalls filled with cows, pigs and sheep and there probably will be for years to come. There are parades of antique tractors every day of the fair to remind people of the way things used to be on the farm.

Editorial: Science scores are disheartening PressPass

There is a list of disclaimers that seems necessary when discussing the results of the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment tests. The tests are designed to ensure students know the things they’re supposed to have learned to that point, but they are given one test on one day and results can sometimes be affected by circumstances beyond the control of students or schools.

Editorial: MCI results present a puzzle PressPass

The Minnesota Department of Education released results of its annual Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment test last week, which means it’s time once again for school districts to pore over pages of numbers to figure out how they stack up. They’ll measure themselves against other districts, against state averages and against their own past performance and try to figure out just what it all means.

Editorial: Relay can be a positive change PressPass

For more than a quarter-century Farmington’s Ramble and Amble fund raiser for the American Cancer Society has been an important part of this city’s summer. It’s done great things for cancer research, bringing in $32,000 last year alone, but it has also helped create a sense of community among cancer survivors and people who have lost loved ones to the disease.

On Friday night nearly 400 young men and women will walk into Farmington High School for the last time as students and walk out as graduates. They will walk out into the world with diplomas earned through 12 years of hard work, study and determination and we believe those who have paid attention will walk out well prepared for the world that awaits them.
