Column: Perfecting the self image
We all have mental pictures of ourselves that are just a little bit out of touch with reality. It’s not that we’re deluded. We just have an idealized image of ourselves.
Maybe we imagine we’re a little bit smarter or better looking than we actually are.

Column: The perfect January getaway
Once the excitement of the holidays dies down, January descends with a heavy dreariness. The biting wind and ever-present threat of frostbite makes me wonder why anyone ever settled in a place where the weather was actively trying to kill them.By Mary Lebens , January 01, 2012
Student column: Resolve to give back in 2012
The New Year is coming up pretty quickly, and it only feels like October. Despite the warm weather and the lack of snow, this is still the time of year when people start to make New Year’s resolutions and reflect on their Christmas memories.

Column: Another holiday battle won
Ladies and gentlemen, elves and elvettes, assorted reindeer, I come to you with good news this week. After months of struggle and hardship and brilliantly lit lawn displays, we have won yet another demanding battle in the increasingly difficult war on Christmas.

Column: Good thing I didn’t make resolutions
Just out of curiosity Monday, I pulled up a column I wrote the first week of 2011. In it, I decided I was already too far into the new year – it was published on Jan. 6 – to set any resolutions. I thought instead I’d make me some pledges.
And it’s a good thing I didn’t make those resolutions, because I’d have a heck of a lot to do in the next week.
First off, I had pledged to learn to play cribbage, because The Beau likes to play Cribbage. Whoops. Didn’t master that one yet. File under “To Do in 2012.”

Column: Play nice, everyone
Sunday mornings in my family are basically the definition of chill. Grab a mug full of coffee, sit back, and watch Good Morning America. Usually on Sundays all they talk about is shopping deals, trends and video highlights. So this past Sunday when GMA started talking about how unsportsmanlike conduct is on the rise, my jaw dropped. How could something like this be on the rise? It took me a few seconds to realize that you actually see it all the time. It just depends on whether you do anything about it.

Column: It’s not just Santa making a list
With 2011 coming to its inevitable end, publications both printed and digital are dedicating a lot of space to lists of things.
The year-end list is a venerated tradition in the publishing business. Some will claim it dates back to Benjamin Franklin, the editor of one of this country’s first newspapers, who is believed to have published a list of the 10 best Founding Father sex scandals in the 1931 year-end issue of his Pennsylvania Gazette.

Column: Bargain alternatives to the iPad
With the holidays just around the corner, my co-workers and friends are asking lots of questions about what tablet to buy as a Christmas gift. One of the hazards of being a computer geek is small talk tends to turn into help desk talk, but I’m thrilled to be asked about tablets. They’re among my favorite gadgets.

Column: Live life without drama
In high-school, drama is an everyday occurrence. No one likes it No one wants to hear about it. But it still happens every day. Why can’t people live a drama-free life? It wouldn’t be so bad, just being nice to people instead of adding drama to the situation and adding stress into everyone’s life.

Column: A lot is riding on the rider
British singer Adele has become something of a sensation over the past year. Her big voice, well crafted songs have won her fans all over the world. And while her music isn’t exactly my style, I can see the appeal.

Column: Giving helps others celebrate
Like many Minnesotans, I am a proud and grateful grandparent. Whether I am hunting and fishing with my grandkids or playing games and helping them with homework when Vicky and I visit, we cherish the memories with all four family blessings.

Student column: Merry Christmas to you, snow and all
A few days ago, my mom told me to look outside at the snow. As I walked to the window and stared out at the endless pillowy blanket of fluff, it came to me that this is the best and worst time of my year. Yes, it’s the season with all the holidays and food, but it’s also the season where you find yourself wondering why you even live here.

Column: Transitioning to a ‘dog person’
Puppies are funny creatures.
I got my first kitten for my 10th birthday. I was 23 when my dad had to take her to the vet for the last time. Michke, my last cat, was my companion for 14 years. Suffice it to say, I understand cats. If I’d been asked, even three months ago, I’d fall under the “Cat Person” category.
But now, Rissa’s come to our house, and she’s really messing with that whole label.

Column: Are you ready for the holiday season?
Are you ready for it? Are you ready for this holiday season? With Thanksgiving out of the way, you have little over a month to get ready for the craziness of Christmas, but are you prepared for it? Prepared for all the gift wrapping, the holiday shopping and the pounds a-gaining? All the snow, ice and decorating to do? I sure hope so, because it is just around the corner.

Column: The mulching of America
I spent part of last Saturday morning using my lawn mower to mulch the leaves that remained in my yard. The mulching mower, as you perhaps know, is the lazy man’s rake. But that’s not really the point.
The point is, as I watched those leaves disappear under my mower only to be chopped to tiny bits, I couldn’t help but think about Black Friday.
