A strong finishing kick in the final half-mile earned Elliot Fenske another trip to the Class 2A State Cross Country Meet.
The Farmington senior moved up four places with his sprint to the finish line at Thursday’s Section 1AA Championships at Brooktree Golf Course, finishing the 5,000-meter course in a time of 16 minutes, 25 seconds, to earn seventh place out of 98 runners.
Farmington senior Elliot Fenske cut 23 seconds off last year’s time and defended his meet title at Tuesday’s New Prague Invitational.
Fenske, who ran a 17:10 on the course last fall, outclassed the field with a 5,000-meter time of 16:47. His high finish helped the Tigers to a second-place team score of 63 points in the nine-team meet.
The orange and black of Farmington High School was lost in the crowd at Friday’s Applejack Invitational.
Competing alongside some of the best individuals and teams from around the metro, the Tiger boys finished 17th out of 22 teams on the soggy course at Aronson Park.
Moving up from 3,200 to 5,000 meters didn’t have much of an effect on the performance of Elliot Fenske.
The Farmington senior followed last week’s season-opening fourth-place finish at the Dakota Classic in Eagan with a sixth-place time of 16 minutes, 52 seconds on the tough 5,000-meter course at Thursday’s Redbird Invitational cross country meet in Montgomery.
The Farmington boys finished fifth and the girls sixth at the season-opening Dakota Classic cross country meet Friday in Eagan.
The boys scored 149 points, placing them two ahead of Missota Conference rival New Prague. Eagan placed three runners in the top five to take the team title, 35-57, over runner-up Apple Valley.
