Student column: Being open to change can lead to good things
Opening up to new ideas can be hard for some people. Opening up to new people can be even more difficult. Throughout life you’ll meet numerous people and all meetings will be a hit or miss.

Column: The right storm for a crazy winter
Way back in November, at the beginning of what has become a balmy, befuddling season, I wrote in this space about the inevitability of snow and ice in a Minnesota winter. You’d do as well complaining about a Super Bowl commercial being terrible or an Academy Awards montage seeming excessive as complain about a cold Minnesota winter.

Editorial: EDA change could benefit Farmington
The city of Farmington continues to consider changes to its economic development efforts. Less than a month after laying off its economic development specialist, the city is tinkering with the makeup of its economic development authority.

Column: Eat well while caring for your heart
On Jan. 31, the President declared February American Heart Month. What a fitting way to tie in Valentine’s Day hearts to taking care of your heart.
I am glad President Obama declared February Heart Month, because I am really enjoying it.

Column: This art is a bunch of hot air
It is a well worn opinion these days that popular culture is in a tight, downward spiral. Television is stupid. Music is juvenile. Everything was better when we were younger and boys didn’t let their pants hang down below their rear ends. Et cetera. Which is really just a classier way of saying, “Blah, blah, blah.”

Student column: Trust is hard to gain, easy to lose
Trust is a very complicated thing. Merriam Webster gave the definition of trust as, “assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something.”

Column: Adjusting to life without sirens
When I lived in town, I used to count sirens at night. Weird as that might sound, I did it, whether I wanted to or not.
I’d hear the sirens in the summer especially, when I would have my windows open in the evenings. At times, I’d wake from a sound sleep. I’d lie there, listening, and counting.

Column: Test preparation, the hard rock way
Nearly everyone feels anxious when facing a test, and for some, crippling anxiety accompanies every test throughout school. Test anxiety haunted me for the past six months, as my Graduate Record Examination loomed on the horizon.

Column: It was a super experience
The Super Bowl took place last Sunday. You probably knew that. It’s been discussed.
If you didn’t know, maybe you could use some catching up. Let’s start at the beginning.

Student column: Be a good teammate
Everyone is probably on a team of some sort, whether it’s a sports team or a club. Your team is made up of people who you spend a lot of time with, and who share a common interest with you. It’s important to be supportive of your teammates because without them you wouldn’t have a complete team.

Family is always there for you
Throughout your life people will come and go, but there will always be one constant: your family. Families are the people who will care and love you through thick and thin, no matter what. They will always be there in the darkest of times and never abandon you. Your parents will always be at the core of your support system. No one loves you like your parents.

Finally getting a handle on things
I’ve decided that whoever came up with the idea of putting handles on bags was a genius. Since I’ve started commuting to work, I’ve especially gained an appreciation for bags with handles. Especially the sturdy ones. Because every day, it seems I drag anywhere from two to six out the door with me.

Column: A big opportunity missed
Wednesday was a big day for big-time college football programs. In early-morning gatherings, high school seniors nationwide formally declared their intention to play for Michigan or Ohio State or Florida or whatever other schools have a high-profile team these days. I don’t watch much football. Is Princeton still good?

Mary Lebens: A yoga adventure as cold sets in
As the biting cold set in last week, I struggled walking the block from my house to the gym. The wind caught the narrow strip of exposed flesh between my boots and my track pants with searing pain. Sticking to those New Year’s resolutions about exercising more is hard when the weather is actively trying to kill you every time you leave the house.

Student column: Class registration is a big step
Determining what classes you want to take the next year is a big step that comes every January. In the last week students have been given the choice to decide what they will learn next year, and in the long run, what will help them get into college.
