Editorial: Changes create opportunities
The world of community newspapers like the Farmington Independent seems to change nearly as quickly as the technology that is available.April 12, 2012
Student column: Freedom comes with a cost
From the age of 2 through the age of 18, we reach for more independence. Whether that means learning to walk on our own, or to going off to college to live on our own, independence is what we seek.By Marissa Opp , April 08, 2012
Column: Mary has given up complaining
After our sultry weekend, it feels like summer has already arrived in full force. Yet Easter is just around the corner. Even though I’m looking forward to the chocolate bunnies and hard boiled eggs, I always feel a little sad bidding Lent farewell.By Mary Lebens , April 07, 2012
Column: It’s a learning process
Nearly everything I know about working on bicycles, which is admittedly not a lot, I learned by pulling apart bikes I didn't need anymore and hoping I could put them back together in some form that still allowed them to function. Or at least function well enough that I wouldn’t get hurt if I rode it.By Nathan Hansen , April 06, 2012
Student column: A nice break, until the work is due
We all have those days when nothing gets done (or done right) and you’re stressed out of your mind. Your parents won’t stop nagging you, your homework takes forever, friends are fighting and you have no idea how everything you have to do is going to get done.By Hannah Seitzinger , April 01, 2012
Column: Gardening challenges await
Well, it’s that time of the year again: time to square off with the yard. When I moved to St. Paul a year ago, I was thrilled I was going to have a yard for the first time. To be able to plant a garden. To buy pretty flowers and make flower beds outside the house.By Michelle Leonard , March 31, 2012
Guest column: Solutions needed for energy issues
Cindy is a single mom living in the suburbs. Like most Minnesotans, she drives to work.By Rep. John Kline , March 30, 2012
Column: Corporate zombies on Halloween
Another Halloween has come and gone. My eyes were misty as I folded up my giant paper cut-out of the Grim Reaper and packed it away with my glow-in-the-dark skeletons. Although Christmas is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year, for me it’s Oct. 31. There’s candy and cheese pizza for dinner. There’s handing out peanut butter cups to my neighbor’s adorable little kids. There’s my dog wearing his cute little pumpkin costume. But best of all, on Halloween you get to be anyone you want to be for one magical day of the year.By Mary Lebens , November 05, 2011
Column: Like brownies that get you drunk
I recently finished brewing my second batch of homemade beer. If I know my brewing history, I believe it was about this time in his career a young Silas P. Budweiser decided to dedicate himself to the production of mediocre beer to be sold to sports fans and guys who like looking at women in skimpy outfits.By Nathan Hansen , June 30, 2011
Column: Adrift on the bicycle trail
Just about every weekend during the brief seasons when Minnesota roads are free from ice and snow I go for at least one long bike ride with my dad and my brother. The rides have become a tradition for us, as much a part of the weekend as Sunday brunches or mowing the lawn or watching marathons of So You Think You Can Dance or Boy Meets World.By Nathan Hansen , June 07, 2011
Column: Bring on another year of madness
There are only a few sporting events events powerful enough to bring people together on a national or even a global scale. The summer Olympics unite us in our love of competition on the world stage. The winter Olympics unite us in wondering whether biathlon really counts as a sport and waiting in for the Olympics that has events the United States can win.By Nathan Hansen , March 19, 2011
Editorial: City's workshop meeting raises questions
Over the past decade there have been significant advances in the ability of local governments to make their operation transparent to the public.March 17, 2011
Column: Walking with a Walkman
I’m an unabashed fan of the dollar store. I relish strange generic items in flimsy packaging. I am thrilled about buying headphones for my Walkman at the dollar store because I go through a pair or two a month. I have a habit of getting the headphone cord caught on stuff while I’m at the gym, like the handle of the treadmill, the seat of the stationary bike or my own elbow.By Mary Lebens , January 17, 2011
Column: Seeing clearly the signs of age
In all of my 43-year-old wisdom, there is one very hard and real fact I’ve learned to accept: sometimes, you just gotta suck it up. For a few years already, I’ve wondered about this cruel game Mother Nature and Father Time have played with my complexion. It’s not fair to have wrinkles and pimples at the same time. One or the other. That way I can find the appropriate lotion or potion to combat the signs of age.By Michelle Leonard , December 23, 2010
Column: Held hostage by a sandwich
Last week we went from shorts to snow shovels in three days flat. The arrival of the first snow completely changes your mindset. I went from low-fat veggie soft tacos for dinner to cheesy potato casserole. This week there was chili in the crock pot, and I baked a dozen chocolate chip cookies. The onset of winter ushers in a load of heavy foods.By Mary Lebens , November 21, 2010
