Editorial: Community involvement is important
A few weeks ago we talked in this space about the high quality of students in Farmington schools. But it’s worth noting that it takes more than students and paid staff these days to keep a school running smoothly. As budgets shrink schools have come to rely more and more on the help of individuals and groups from outside the school walls.February 17, 2011

Editorial: Tech upgrade should benefit students
There will probably be people who see the Farmington School District’s plan to commit more than $5 million over five years to improve technology districtwide and wonder why it is necessary. We didn’t have fancy projectors and computers when I went through school, the argument always seems to go, so why should kids today?January 27, 2011

Editorial: Blight-removal money can help many
Blight is never easy to get rid of, and it doesn't matter if you're in Farmington, Minneapolis or New York. Properties fall into disrepair because there is nobody either willing, able or available to care for them. The people who are able to fix them aren't the ones responsible, and the people who are responsible aren't always willing, able or available to take action.January 14, 2010

Looking forward to a new year
We’ve reached the end of another year in Farmington, and it’s been a busy one. The Farmington School District answered a lawsuit filed by the architect responsible for its new high school with a suit of its own and still opened the school successfully in September. Farmington’s seniors put on their work clothes and pulled out their fundraising baskets to help turn the former city hall into the new Rambling River Center. And one Farmington teen found himself unexpectedly in possession of a bag full of drug money.December 31, 2009

Help make someone’s Christmas merry
These are difficult times for a lot of people. More and more of us know people who have lost a job or who have lost their homes. Others struggle to pay the bills every month. Many are focused on providing for their own families this holiday season, and there seems to be less time than ever to think about helping others who have things even tougher.December 17, 2009

Decision, not discussion on ice arena
There appears to be a disconnect between messages about the need for action to fix the ice surface at Schmitz-Maki Arena. Ever since it became clear vital equipment at the 30-year-old arena was in danger of failing the message has been that the city needs to decide quickly what to do with the building. And city officials have said they need to start moving ahead with plans by January in order to have the arena ready for the 2010-11 high school hockey season. Yet after months of discussions the Farmington City Council has yet to take any definitive action.December 10, 2009
