Farmington senior Greg Werner became the first Farmington golfer to qualify for the state meet since Sammy Schmitz did it in 1999 by earning medalist honors at Tuesday’s Section 1AAA golf tournament at Bellwood Oaks Golf Course in Hastings.
With the regular season winding down, Farmington golf coach Gerry Greupner elected to put four freshman in the varsity lineup to see what they could do at Saturday’s Dakota Invite at Emerald Greens Golf Course outside Hastings.
This year, a 15-under-par round of 57 was good enough for the team that included Dave Akin, Jake Endersbe and Ryan Stusz to win the team title outright at the 15th-annual Tiger Fan Club Golf Scramble held Friday at Fountain Valley Golf Course.
Farmington girls golf coach Shawn Anderson thought his team was capable of much better when it turned in a cumulative score of 400 in finishing third in a conference quadrangular May 1 at Stonebrooke Golf Club.
Turns out, he was right.
