Column: Grappling with a fruit problem
You could say I have an aspirational relationship with fresh fruit.
I’m not sure exactly why you’d say that, there being a nearly infinite selection of conversational topics more interesting than my attitude toward produce. But were you to say it, it would be accurate.

Column: Big decisions don't come easily
I’ve been wrestling with a big decision in my life lately. I’ve decided that the time has come for me to step down as president of the Farmington American Legion Auxiliary, but it’s not been an easy decision by any stretch of the imagination.

Student column: Be happy with who you are
It takes a lot to surprise me. Waking up to find the world ending in the morning would probably be a shock, but still, I’m fairly difficult to surprise.
A couple days ago I pondered on the question, “what makes you beautiful?” Then while I was talking to my friend the question changed. It was no longer, “what makes you beautiful?” but instead “How could this beautiful girl not see that she is?”

Column: Winter has to come sometime
A little more than two months ago I wrote in this space about the arrival of winter in Minnesota and the predictable howls of disappointment and surprise that accompanied it.

Student voices: When it comes to electronics, who's in control?
Everyone has some kind of electronic device in their life: a cell phone, a computer, a TV, an iPod. Have you ever stopped to think about the role they play in our lives? They make certain things easier, but they also make some things take longer.

Column: Going high tech to keep resolutions
When I worked out at the downtown Minneapolis YMCA, every January the exercise classes were jam packed. By the middle of February, class sizes were back to normal and I no longer waited in line for a treadmill. The shelf life of New Year’s resolutions is limited, at least for the ones that involve sweating a lot.

Column: Make the most of life in 2012
On Sunday, a friend of mine posted a kind of funny picture on her Facebook page. It was a cartoon of two Mayans talking, one of them leaning on a circular calendar.
“I only had enough room to go up to 2012,” one of them says.
“Ha! That’ll freak somebody out someday!” says the other.

Student voices: A new year brings new hopes
With 2011 gone in the wind, we can greet 2012 with new hopes and expectations. New Years Eve was the time to reflect and give the year its pass or fail. No matter how good or bad it ended up being, in the end it wouldn’t stop the new year from coming around and washing it all away.

Column: Perfecting the self image
We all have mental pictures of ourselves that are just a little bit out of touch with reality. It’s not that we’re deluded. We just have an idealized image of ourselves.
Maybe we imagine we’re a little bit smarter or better looking than we actually are.

Column: The perfect January getaway
Once the excitement of the holidays dies down, January descends with a heavy dreariness. The biting wind and ever-present threat of frostbite makes me wonder why anyone ever settled in a place where the weather was actively trying to kill them.By Mary Lebens , January 01, 2012
Student column: Resolve to give back in 2012
The New Year is coming up pretty quickly, and it only feels like October. Despite the warm weather and the lack of snow, this is still the time of year when people start to make New Year’s resolutions and reflect on their Christmas memories.

Column: Another holiday battle won
Ladies and gentlemen, elves and elvettes, assorted reindeer, I come to you with good news this week. After months of struggle and hardship and brilliantly lit lawn displays, we have won yet another demanding battle in the increasingly difficult war on Christmas.

Column: Good thing I didn’t make resolutions
Just out of curiosity Monday, I pulled up a column I wrote the first week of 2011. In it, I decided I was already too far into the new year – it was published on Jan. 6 – to set any resolutions. I thought instead I’d make me some pledges.
And it’s a good thing I didn’t make those resolutions, because I’d have a heck of a lot to do in the next week.
First off, I had pledged to learn to play cribbage, because The Beau likes to play Cribbage. Whoops. Didn’t master that one yet. File under “To Do in 2012.”

Column: Play nice, everyone
Sunday mornings in my family are basically the definition of chill. Grab a mug full of coffee, sit back, and watch Good Morning America. Usually on Sundays all they talk about is shopping deals, trends and video highlights. So this past Sunday when GMA started talking about how unsportsmanlike conduct is on the rise, my jaw dropped. How could something like this be on the rise? It took me a few seconds to realize that you actually see it all the time. It just depends on whether you do anything about it.

Column: It’s not just Santa making a list
With 2011 coming to its inevitable end, publications both printed and digital are dedicating a lot of space to lists of things.
The year-end list is a venerated tradition in the publishing business. Some will claim it dates back to Benjamin Franklin, the editor of one of this country’s first newspapers, who is believed to have published a list of the 10 best Founding Father sex scandals in the 1931 year-end issue of his Pennsylvania Gazette.
