Column: Out with the (really, really) old
The start of a new year is a good time to take stock of your life. To look at where you are, where you want to be and what you need to do to get there. Some people mark the occasion by making resolutions. I’m cleaning out my wallet.By Nathan Hansen , January 03, 2013
Student column: Know your holiday trivia
Based on all the decorations, music, and the recently fallen snow, you can tell that Christmas is just around the corner. When people are asked what their favorite holiday is, the most common answer is Christmas.December 22, 2012
Column: Making Christmas memories
With just under a week until Christmas morning, I’m feeling like I’m not quite ready for the big day. Who am I kidding? I really am not ready for the Christmas season. In any way, shape or form.By Michelle Leonard , December 21, 2012
Column: Unburdened before the end
There has been a whole lot of fuss lately about the Mayans and what some will tell you is their prediction that the world will end this week in a hail of fire, populations devoured by serpents and, worst of all, condemned to endless reruns of The Jersey Shore.By Nathan Hansen , December 20, 2012
Editorial: Farmington came through with toys
Just a few weeks ago, police chief Brian Lindquist was in a difficult situation. He expected a big demand for this year’s Toys for Town drive, and with the collection period moving quickly toward its end, donations had been slow to come in. There appeared to be a very real possibility the department’s efforts would fall short for the first time in memory.December 20, 2012
Student column: High school’s not like it is in movies
Everyone wishes their life could be like the movies: all smiles and laughs, more passing time than class, stupid drama that gets resolved in the next episode, and no big issues except what they’re gonna do after schoolBy Marissa Opp , December 16, 2012
Column: Farmington’s top 10 coolest things
News programs in December and January are usually stuffed with top 10 lists. Although these are a handy way to fill a little space in a column, I haven’t resorted to them yet. The key word here is “yet.”By Mary Lebens , December 15, 2012
Column: Time to put the bike away
Depending on your point of view, last weekend’s record snowfall inspired one of a handful of reactions. If you love winter, you probably thought the daylong blizzard was a wonderful thing, a chance after last year’s mostly snowless year to break out your skis and snowmobiles and sleds.By Nathan Hansen , December 13, 2012
Student column: Would you like horse meat with your ice cream?
Even though it’s the beginning of December and the weather is just going to be getting colder and colder, I still like to go out and grab the occasional worldwide phenomenon ice cream treat. Even on days when it feels like my fingers and nose are going to freeze off because of how cold it is outside, I find myself craving this creamy delight.By Rebecca Opp , December 09, 2012
Column: Gadgets cannot replace everything
I heard something on the radio the other day, and I have to say, it disturbs me quite a bit. Apparently, there is now an app that parents can get on their smartphones or iPads or what have you, that will read the popular children’s book, “Goodnight Moon,” to kids. For a mere $4.99, you can purchase the app and let the computer do the talking. Literally.By Michelle Leonard , December 08, 2012
Column: Just try to keep up with it all
In ancient Greek myth, Sisyphus was condemned to forever roll a boulder uphill, only to have it tumble back to the bottom, all of his progress abruptly wiped out.By Nathan Hansen , December 06, 2012
Student column: Taking a holiday survey
I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving this year. Spending time with your family on a holiday is always a great thing. What’s your favorite Thanksgiving memory? Do you like the food? Being with your extended family you don’t usually see?By Marissa Opp , December 02, 2012
Column: Mary’s secret secondhand pact
With the turkey carved and mashed potatoes decimated, it’s time to turn to the colorful store ads and plan our holiday shopping. According to a Gallup poll, the average adult is spending $770 this year on gifts. I find this figure astounding. I just sold my conversion van to a teenager this fall for $850. The idea that one person spends almost as much on Christmas gifts as another spends on a van to get to work is unthinkable.By Mary Lebens , December 01, 2012
Column: Sorry to see these lights go out
I learned this week that one of my favorite Christmas light displays is going away. It’s making me a little bit sad. Not a lot. You won’t find me blubbering in the corner. That would be weird. It’s just making me a little misty. Deep down inside. Outside I’m still as tough and manly as ever.By Nathan Hansen , November 29, 2012
Student column: Music can have a big influence
Music is such a common thing, but sometimes when we are so used to things, we tend to not pay attention to how great it really is.By Becca Opp , November 25, 2012
