A historic first year for Hampton mayor
Hampton made international news in November of 2008 when the city elected Paye Flomo as its new mayor.
Flomo is the first native Liberian to be elected to a government office in the U.S., and some have suggested he’s the first African-born American to be elected, he said.

Fire damages Farmington home
A fire the evening of April 16 damaged a home at 5311 Upper 182nd St.
A homeowner there who asked that her name not be used said she was watching TV in the basement when she smelled smoke shortly after 6 p.m. She grabbed her two cats and got out. A neighbor called 911.

School spirit and FHS band program impress visiting German students
Neither Anne Pfeifer, 15, nor Luca Hartmann, 16, had ever taken a multiple choice test in their lives, up until a couple of weeks ago.
In their homeland, Germany, multiple choice tests aren’t an option.
The two high school students are on a monthlong exchange program through The Friendship Connection Inc. They arrived in Minnesota March 18, and were scheduled to leave Wednesday.

Gudmundson named interim sheriff in Steele County
Former Dakota County Sheriff Don Gudmundson has been selected sheriff
again, this time in Steele County.
At a special Steele County Board of Commissioners meeting Friday
afternoon, the commissioners authorized county coordinator Dave
Severson to begin contract negotiations with Gudmunson, who retired as
Dakota County Sheriff at the end of February.

FHS grad sets off on the long walk to Miami
Sometime after the prayer offered for his benefit and before he took the first step of the longest walk of his life Jordan Dibb teared up.
Maybe he was thinking of the support people had shown him since he announced plans to walk 1,800 miles from Minneapolis to Miami, or about the size of the task in front of him. Maybe he’d just realized how much his feet were going to hurt by the time he was done.
