Editorial: Turkey Bingo is a valuable event
The Farmington Fire Department’s annual Turkey Bingo is a remarkable event. It’s three hours of people crammed side-by-side into nearly every available space the department’s downtown fire station has to offer. It’s an old-fashioned community event where kids in stocking caps sit down the table from someone with a brightly-colored mohawk.November 17, 2011

Editorial: New fire truck would be a smart addition
It seems unlikely that having an additional engine on hand would have made much difference when Farmington firefighters responded to a report of a house fire last Friday morning. The fire, which had started with a discarded cigarette butt in the garage, had spread quickly and much of the house was engulfed by the time firefighters arrived.November 10, 2011

Editorial: Have your say in budget discussion
The Farmington City Council has a tricky decision coming up as it tries to finalize its budget. Council members have spent a lot of time in recent weeks discussing the possibility of increasing taxes next year and for several years to come in order to build up a fund that would allow the city to pay for big projects up front rather than bonding for the work and ultimately, because of interest, paying more for the work.November 03, 2011

Editorial: Turbine is a valuable addition
The University of Minnesota’s newest research tool doesn’t exactly blend in with the rest of the Empire Township countryside. At something like 80 meters tall, it can’t really disappear into the landscape.October 27, 2011

Editorial: Farmington celebrates Halloween while doing good deeds
We always figured Farmington’s choice of orange and black as its official colors had something to do with the high school’s tiger mascot. Now, though, we’re not so sure. It’s starting to seem like the color scheme might have as much to do with pumpkins and witches as a big cat’s stripes. Farmington is quickly turning into Halloween central, and it’s fun to watch.October 20, 2011

Editorial: Back-to-school time requires extra caution on the roads
Depending on your commuting schedule, you might have noticed some familiar yellow vehicles returning to the roads this week. The start of a new school year on Tuesday means buses are back with their flashing lights and stop signs. Young school children are back sidewalks and at corner bus stops. It means drivers have reason to be extra cautious.September 08, 2011

Editorial: Push for excellence is encouraging
Where we see good news is in assistant superintendent Christine Weymouth’s statement that the Farmington School District isn’t satisfied with simply scoring better than the state average. That the district wants to be considered one of the state’s best academic performers. One of the big dogs, as Weymouth put it.September 01, 2011

Editorial: Racing for a good cause
On Sept. 9 a group of Dakota County mayors that includes Farmington’s Todd Larson will rev their borrowed engines and take to the track at Shakopee’s Raceway Park. Engines will roar, taunts will perhaps be exchanged — all in good fun we’re sure — and ideally the whole exercise will bring in a lot of donations for food shelves like the one run by 360 Communities in Farmington.August 25, 2011

Editorial: Photo contest offers a fresh view of city
If you’re not paying attention, it might be easy to think of Farmington as an ordinary suburb. There are winding streets and cul-de-sacs. There are parks and trails and people who live here but commute to jobs in other cities. But if you look closer you’ll find plenty of things that make Farmington unique.August 18, 2011

Editorial: Trinty hall a valuable part of fair experience
For more than 50 years the members of Farmington’s Trinity Lutheran Church have been a fixture at the Dakota County Fair. For much of that time the church has had one of the fairgrounds’ most permanent presences, a concrete-floored wooden building that has stood since 1968 as the home of the fair food option that least resembles what modern fair food has become.August 11, 2011
