All of Farmington’s elementary schools have Read Aloud events — nights where families can come to their respective schools and hear area volunteers read stories out loud — but ARES is doing something a little different this year.

North Trail will collect shoes for GreenSneakers project
North Trail Elementary School is once again participating in the GreenSneakers Eco Challenge. This is the second year that the school is participating in this drive that will take old, outgrown sneakers and refurbish them to become affordable footwear for people in need around the world.

Riverview Elementary science fair draws record-breaking number of participants
Riverview Elementary School third grader Liam Barnett thought maybe he’d try to do his science project on how fast sound travels, but he found it was just a little too hard to form his own hypothesis. ARES students have a history at the hop
Akin Road Elementary held its 15th annual Sock Hop Feb. 3. The event is not a fundraiser, ARES Parent Teacher Partnership president Mary Treakle said. There is a silent auction and funds from that part of the event go to the PTP – this year’s proceeds are helping to bring technology into the classrooms – but fundraising isn’t the point of the event. Fun is.

Haenni wins state police chief's essay contest award
It’s hard to say who was more surprised by a recent essay award – Farmington police chief Brian Lindquist, or Christian Life School eighth grader Abigail Haenni. Last week, Lindquist stopped out at CLS to present Haenni with a plaque and a check for $100. Haenni was recently named a winner in the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association’s annual eighth grade essay contest.

Fifth grade career fair gives students a chance to explore their options
Not every kid can grow up to be a professional athlete.
Unfortunatley, that seems to be the career choice of most fifth grade boys in Farmington’s elementary schools, according to North Trail Elementary School student advocate Lisa Sammlar.
But after last Friday’s career fair at Farmington Elementary School, some students might think designing a water park sounds like a pretty good deal. Or maybe they like the idea of fixing motorcycles or confiscating things people are trying to smuggle into the state.

Farmington elementary schools compete in the spirit of the season
Walk through the doors at either Akin Road Elementary School or Farmington Elementary School, and there’s no doubt kids get the whole “giving to others” concept.
Just inside the entryway at both schools, there are piles of canned goods, boxed meals and other nonperishables. All of the collections are for the Farmington Food Shelf.
