Letters: Fair judges should lighten up
Surprised to find so many categories of photo entries in this year’s Dakota County Fair art show with no blue ribbon winners, I was told by a couple of the helpers in the art building that, “if the judge doesn’t feel any of the entries are worthy of a blue ribbon, he doesn’t have to reward any.” I was taken aback by this explanation and replied, “This is a simple county fair, not a professional art show.”August 19, 2010
Column: Lessons learned at the fair
The Dakota County Fair is a remarkable event. It’s one of the rare opportunities in this world to indulge guilt-free in massive quantities of artery-clogging food, ogle livestock and cheer as strangers ram headlong into each other in an event that is the daydreams of any driver trapped in rush-hour traffic sprung to violent life.By Nathan Hansen , August 19, 2010
Column: A lifetime at the county fair
It’s Monday afternoon, and I’m at my desk. I’ve been to the 2010 Dakota County Fair once already, and I’ve got to say - I love this time of year. Sure, it’s a pretty steamy day, and sure, wandering through the heat and humidity already has me feeling like a good nap would hit the spot. And maybe the bellyful of Taco Dick’s and 4H chocolate shake is adding to my fatigue.By Michelle Leonard , August 13, 2010

Animals need adjusting, too
Hal Brown’s first introduction to animal chiropractic was while he was still studying chiropractic therapy for humans. In one class, he watched a video that showed a cowboy in South Dakota adjusting horses. At the time, Brown dismissed the concept as impossible - chiropractic for people was difficult enough, he said. Not to mention, practicing on animals was illegal in the U.S.By Katrina Styx , August 11, 2010
Earn that fair food: Go for a run in the fair's first 5K
The 2010 Great Prairie Dakota Dash 5K run at the Dakota County Fair is planned for 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 15 at the fairgrounds. It will be the first time that the fair has played host to a fun run, but organizer Todd McIntyre hopes it won’t be the last.By Chad Richardson , August 11, 2010

Dakota County shows its skills
For more than a decade, the Dakota County Fair has played host to a showing of talent. A gallery of acts from singers and songwriters, to instrumentalists, dancers and gymnasts. The event has no rehearsals or run-thrus. It is not professionally televised or expertly edited. Instead, it is a showcase of talent grown in the backyard of Dakota County.By Kayla Schmidt , August 05, 2010
Showing off their bunny hops
Agility training is a phrase often associated with dogs, but have you ever seen a rabbit weave through cones and leap over a jump two or three times its height?By Katrina Styx , August 05, 2010
Competitions require kids to hang on tight
What’s more fun than watching a small child in a hockey helmet try to ride a sheep? Well, seeing a young teen try to catch a 150-pound calf or wrestle a greased pig might be close.By Michelle Leonard , August 05, 2010
