Grants will allow more reading support at elementary schools

Four Farmington elementary schools will offer additional reading support for students next year thanks to grant awards from the Minnesota Reading Corps. The grants will provide full-time literacy tutors during the 2009-10 school year to Meadowview, Akin Road, North Trail and Farmington elementary schools.

The Minnesota Reading Corps is an AmeriCorps initiate to help every Minnesota child become a successful reader by the end of third grade. The program places AmeriCorps members in school sites to provide one-on-one tutoring and research-based interventions to students who are struggling with reading.

"It is a privilege to be part of this grant program from the Minnesota Reading Corps," said Christine Weymouth, assistant superintendent for educational services. "Engaging our students in meaningful rich literacy practice is a very important goal for our school district. This grant will help classroom teachers to strengthen and enrich all literacy opportunities for our students, enabling us to engage our students where necessary in one to one instruction."
