Stand-up comedy show is coming Nov. 7

Four funny women will highlight an evening of entertainment Nov. 7 at Farmington’s Glenhaven Event Center.

Longtime stand-up comedian Kris Miles is organizing the event, which is being pitched to hunting widows and their non-hunting male friends. Miles, who is coming back to comedy after taking several years off to raise a family, will serve as host. The headliner is Shannan Paul, a Twin Cities comedian and speaker and a former DJ. Also on the bill are Susie Saccoman, a longtime Twin Cities comedian who works as a teacher in her day job, and Margaret Blaylock, who Miles describes as an “up and comer” on the local comedy scene.

All four women approach their comedy from very different directions, but Miles said they’re all great at what they do.

“I think these women are frickin’ hilarious and they need to be out there,” Miles said. “We’ve all got a history, and it all comes up on stage and it’s hilarious. These women are so entertaining.”

Miles did stand-up for 13 years before she took her break, and while a lot has changed since she was last regularly on stage she said one thing hasn’t: It’s hard for a female comic to find work. Over eight months of performing steadily at open mic nights Miles saw maybe 15 female comics.

That’s part of the inspiration for this show. Miles knows there are funny women out there, and she wants to give them a place to shine. That’s part of the inspiration behind what she’s calling her Women on Top shows. She said Glenhaven owner George Maverick jumped at the idea when she presented it to him.

The show presents some challenges. Glenhaven seats 400 people, which is a big room to fill.

“I’ve really bit off a big donut here,” Miles said.

She is excited, though. She’s already started talking to women about the next show.

Doors for the Nov. 7 show open at 5 p.m. There is dinner catered by Rudy’s Redeye Grill starting at 6 and the show from 6:30 to 8. From 8:30 to 11:30 there will be a DJ providing dance music.

Tickets are available at glenhavenevents.com/events.
