Organized for Farmington: November news and notes

Farmington VFW

Boy Scout Troop 119 will host a steak fry dinner at the VFW Club on Nov. 16, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Von Hanson steak, baked potato, salad, veggies and dessert will be served for a $10 donation.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit the VFW Club from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. The little ones can have their pictures taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus. They will receive a can of soda and a bag of goodies.

A big thank you to the three Boy Scout Troops and their leaders for helping out with the Patriotic Day dinner this year. They were present with wheelchairs to help the people who find it hard to walk. Every year they have done a fantastic job. Thank you, too, to the cheerleaders and dance line girls, for helping with the dinners.

The VFW visited six fifth grade classrooms this year. A folding of the US flag was shown and Flag Etiquette brochures were give to each students. The students talked to the veterans about their service. A total of 600 small flags were given to the students.

Farmington Food Shelf

Thank you to the generous Farmington Community this past month!

The Farmington Food Shelf was showered with food donations from local Farmington School groups, the local Halloween Walk, church youth groups, businesses and Farmington neighbors that hosted Haunted Houses for the Food Shelf.

The need is great and your generosity is overwhelming! Thank you for “Caring for your Neighbors”.

The food shelf is open for produce to be dropped off between the hours of noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Instructional Services Center, 510 Walnut St., Farmington. Enter the east doors on 6th street and the food shelf is the second door on your left. Thank you!

Farmington Lions

The Farmington Lions have just finished their 2013 Drive for Kids in need of Hats, mittens, and scarves.

These were collected with help from Lakeville Lions and Family Dollar stores. Over 300 were distributed thru The Farmington Schools.

Trinity Campus

Farmington Knights of Columbus

The Farmington Knights of Columbus will be having its have its turkey Bingo on Saturday, Nov. 23.

The Farmington Knights of Columbus Council 2400 will be hosting its annual Turkey Bingo Saturday, November 23, from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Church of St. Michael, 22120 Denmark Ave., Farmington.

A delicious sloppy Joe dinner will be served starting at 5:30 p.m. and bingo will begin when dinner is done at approximately 6:30 p.m. Also on the menu will be chips, pickles, bars and potato salad. Popcorn, soft serve ice cream, beer, wine and pop will also be available. The cost is $7 per person and a maximum of $25 per family.

Farmington Yellow Ribbon Network

Thank you to everyone who helped make the Farmington Patriotic Days such a success!

We have several events coming up in December. On Dec. 2, we invite all veterans to joins us for our monthly veteran dinner at 6 p.m., St Michael’s Church.

On Friday, Dec. 6 we invite the whole community to join us in celebrating our fifth anniversary as Minnesota’s first Yellow Ribbon City. Join Governor Mark Dayton, Commissioner Larry Shellito and Adjutant General Richard Nash in a look back to how we have supported service members, veterans and their families in our community.

Then to continue the festivities for the weekend, on Sunday, Dec. 8 when we host our annual Cookie Walk at Rambling River Center from 1:30-3:30 p.m.. Bring in two plates of cookies and leave with a larger tray assortment of cookies and treats! We will deliver large cookie trays to military families and veterans across the community. We are still adding names to our list so if you know of a veteran or military family who might enjoy a cookie tray, let us know! Thank you to this community for supporting us these past five years!

Farmington Dew Days

Our next Dew Days meeting is Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. at Gossips. Anyone interested in helping with Dew Days 2014 is welcome to attend. For more information contact Darla Donnelly at 651-283-8891.

Dakota City Heritage Village

Friday evenings have been added to the annual Christmas in the Village event at Dakota City Heritage Village.

The event will be offered the first two weekends in December -- Dec. 6 and 13, 4 to 8 p.m., and Dec. 7, 8, 14 and 15, 1 to 8 p.m.

The event features lights and decorations throughout the village, Christmas crafts for children to make and take, writing letters to Mrs. Santa and talking with Santa, music in the church, rides on trolleys pulled by draft horses and more.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 189

American Legion Auxiliary Farmington Unit 189 cordially invites the public to our first Soup Luncheon fundraiser, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 20. It will be held in the clubroom of the Farmington VFW, 421 Third St. Tickets are $7, and you’ll be able to try different kinds of soups. All proceeds from this luncheon will go toward the American Legion Auxiliary programs for veterans and our community that we support.

Michelle Leonard

Michelle Leonard joined the Woodbury Bulletin staff in November, 2014, after 14 years covering news for the Bulletin's sister publication, the Farmington Rosemount Independent Town Pages.  Michelle earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications: News-Editorial from Mankato State University in 1991. She is an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary Clifford Larson Unit 189 of Farmington, and served as the 2014-15 Third District President to the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Minnesota. Michelle is also the volunteer coordinator for the Minnesota Newspaper Museum which is open annually during the Minnesota State Fair. She has earned Minnesota Newspaper Association awards in Investigative Reporting, Local News Coverage, Feature Photography and Column Writing.
