Organized for Farmington: January news and notes

Here's a monthly update from Farmington area organizations and clubs

Farmington Lions

The Farmington Lions have started selling tickets for our “200 CLUB.”

Lions Club members are selling $25 tickets. Each ticket holder is eligible for a $25 drawing, every week for the next 26 weeks. Plus, ticket holders are eligible for a grand prize drawing of $300. The grand prize will be drawn at the annual chicken dinner in September. This is the best deal in town. Contact any Lions member for tickets or more information.

Farmington Food Shelf

The Farmington Food Shelf is so grateful for the Farmington community’s support for the last few months. Thanksgiving and Christmas donations helped to fill our shelves for our needy neighbors.

The food shelf is need of a few adult volunteers to pick up food donations at Target (north of Farmington on Pilot Knob Road) one Saturday a month at 8 a.m. The volunteers would then deliver the food to the food shelf in Farmington. Total time commitment is about 2 to 2 1/2 hours one Saturday morning a month. If interested, please contact Mary or Verlyn at the Farmington Food Shelf, 651-463-5019.

Please leave your name and phone number and why you are calling if you get the voice mail. Volunteers are at the food shelf on Tuesday and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The food shelf is open for produce to be dropped off between the hours of noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Instructional Services Center, 510 Walnut St., Farmington. Enter the east doors on 6th street and the food shelf is the second door on your left. Thank you!

Dakota County Library in Farmington

The Farmington Library is busily packing up its collection for the move to City Hall. Thanks so much for your patience while we make this transition!

Farmington VFW Post 7662

On Jan. 4, Commander Ron Ersfeld attended the 2nd District meeting. The winners of the Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen from the 2nd District were invited, and the first place winners in each category gave their speeches. The VOD and Patriots Pen winners both gave excellent essays.

The regular January meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 14, 7 p.m., at the VFW Club.

Proceeds from the monthly steak fry dinner scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 18, will be donated to Rambling River Center. We will be serving from 5-8 p.m. The menu includes steak, baked potato, veggies, bread, dessert, coffee and water, all for a $10 donation.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 189

American Legion Auxiliary Farmington Unit 189 will hold a potluck dinner at our next meeting, Monday, Jan. 20.

At that meeting, we will be making Valentines Day cards to deliver to the Hastings Veterans Home. Members are encouraged to attend and join us for dinner. The potluck and card making will begin at 6 p.m. We will be meeting at the Farmington VFW.

We are still trying to reach our membership goals for the 2013-14 year. We encourage current members who have yet to renew to do so, and welcome anyone who may be interested in joining. If you need information on how to become a member of the American Legion family, please call 651-238-5614, and we can direct you to the appropriate membership chairmen.

For God and Country.

Rotary Club of Farmington

The Rotary Club of Farmington held its annual senior holiday luncheon Dec. 19 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

Rotarians served a meal catered by Pizza Man and provided entertainment by the Farmington High School choir and dancers from Synergy Dance Center. Seniors who attended also went home with gift bags.

Farmington Rotary is always looking for new members who are interested in making good friends while serving the community. The club meets for lunch at noon Thursdays at Celts, 200 Third St.
