Work on Farmington Veterans Memorial delayed

Earlier this year, organizers of Farmington’s new veterans memorial planned to dedicate the memorial at the end of this month. Now, though, the date has delayed to September.

The wet weather of late has caused some of the hold up, committee member Leon Orr said, but work is being done when the conditions allow. More of the issue, he said, is getting all of the materials fabricated and ready for installation.

“It’s not like going to Menard’s and getting a load of stone. Every piece has to be cut to a certain size, and there’s a lot of engraving to do,” Orr said.

Some groundwork has been done. The concrete has been poured, and workers are digging out the sand in preparation for the installation of the 237 pavers that have been purchased.

Interest in the project seems to be picking up, too.

“Now that people see it’s there, everybody is getting more interested. People are really getting into the spirit as those things are happening, and a lot of the work is being donated,” Orr said.

The new, tentative date for the Farmington Veterans Memorial dedication is Sunday, Sept. 7, beginning at 2 p.m.
