Farmington man is state truck driving champ

Farmington resident Bruce Quaal, a professional truck driver for Yellow Transportation, took first place in his class at the 62nd annual Minnesota Truck Driving Championships June 8.

Quaal competed in the tank truck division, one of eight classes in the contest. He had the top cumulative score following the written test, personal interview, driving skills course and a pre-trip inspection where drivers must identify planted safety defects on a tractor-trailer. Greg Payne (Iowa City, IA), and Jesse Harren (Lino Lakes) placed second and third respectively in the tank truck division.

Overall, 113 professional truck drivers came to Burnsville from across the state to compete for the title of the state's best truck driver. Brad Cornelius, a professional truck driver for Schroeder Milk Company, was crowned the Grand Champion for the event, receiving the highest overall score among all classes of competitors. The Team Award went to SYSCO Minnesota with their drivers receiving the highest average score.

Quaal and the other first place class champions will compete in the 2008 National Truck Driving Championships in August in Houston, Texas.

The Minnesota Truck Driving Championships is an annual competition hosted by the Minnesota Trucking Association Safety Council. The MTA is Minnesota's largest trucking organization, representing the industry statewide with advocacy, public relations and support programs.
