Local Guard soliders will return Sunday

The first wave of 34th Infantry Division soldiers will return to Minnesota from a year-long deployment in Iraq Sunday according to a release from the Minnesota National Guard.

More than 250 soldiers are scheduled to arrive in the state by plane around 5 p.m.

The rest of the more than 1,000 soldiers will return in waves over the coming weeks.

Upon arrival the soldiers will be bused to the Rosemount, Inver Grove Heights and Stillwater armories where, they will be greeted by their families.

The 34th deployed last February. Since May the division has commanded military forces in the southern third of Iraq, headquartered at Contingency Operating Base Basra.

The soldiers spent time in Fort Louis, Wash. for medical and administrative processing prior to returning to Minnesota.
