Highway 3 closed following car-bike accident

A 14-year-old Farmington boy was airlifted to Regions Hospital after being struck by a car on Highway 3 Tuesday afternoon.

According to Minnesota State Patrol trooper Mike Gensmer, the 14-year-old boy was riding his bicycle across Highway 3 when the accident occurred. He was riding in the crosswalk, Gensmer said, but was crossing against the light, which was red for eastbound traffic.

The boy was struck by an 18-year-old Farmington man, who was driving northbound on Highway 3. The 18-year-old was driving a four door Lexus, which struck the younger teen and carried him approximately 75 yards before coming to a stop.

The younger teen was thrown from the hood of the car and landed in a northbound turn lane of Highway 3.

The older teen was not injured, Gensmer said. The bicyclist received extensive head injury and a broken arm. He was not wearing a helmet.

Highway 3 was closed in both directions while emergency personnel responded to the scene.
