One hurt as car-semi crash shuts down Highway 3

An accident involving a semi and a Ford SUV closed Highway 3 in Farmington for a while Wednesday afternoon and sent one driver to the hospital for what a state trooper said were precautionary reasons.

According to Minnesota State Trooper Mike Gensmer, the semi, hauling a load of sand, was southbound on Highway 3 when a northbound Ford Escape attempted to make a left turn onto Willow Street in front of it.

“The semi did a quite commendable job of avoiding a head-on crash,” Gensmer said.

The female driver of the Escape, who was eight months pregnant, was taken to Regions Hospital with minor injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

“It could have been a lot worse,” Gensmer said.

Highway 3 was closed in both directions while crews cleaned up the accident scene.
