RANDOLPH, Minn. — A Cannon Falls man and his infant daughter were killed and his wife and son were seriously injured after a sport-utility vehicle they were in collided with a semi-trailer truck Monday morning in rural southern Dakota County, authorities said.
Jason Calderara, 31, was driving a Kia Sportage SUV that collided with a semi about 11:25 a.m. on Minnesota 56 near Randolph. His 1-year-old daughter Melody also died in the collision.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Calderara’s Kia was heading north on 56 when it pulled out to pass a car north of 280th Street. After passing, the Kia cut back to the northbound lane to avoid hitting a minivan that was southbound, the patrol said. The minivan driver moved to the right and slammed on the brakes, as did the semi-trailer driver behind, causing the truck to jackknife and slam into the Sportage.
Nicholas Calderara, 9, of Cannon Falls and Elizabeth Calderara, 26, were airlifted from the scene and hospitalized with serious injuries, the patrol said.
The driver of the truck was identified as James B. Sathre, 71, of Faribault, Minn. His injuries weren’t life-threatening.
