Sex offender charged with failing to register

A predatory offender has been arrested after not updating his registry after a traffic stop in Empire Township.

On June 16, a Dakota County Sheriff's deputy was on patrol, on Highway 3. The deputy ran a check on a Pontiac Grand Prix; the owner of the grand prix was 33-year-old Kevin Scott Hanson, a registered predatory offender. While going through his file, the deputy discovered that Hanson had not updated his registry to show he acquired the vehicle. According to a criminal complaint filed in the Dakota County Attorney's office, Hanson admitted he hadn't registered the vehicle and told the deputy that he has been working for a moving company for the last two months and had failed to update his registry to reflect that as well. Per the registration requirements Hanson has five days to make the update.

Hanson has a prior failure to register conviction from Jan. 2009. Hanson has been charged with failure to register as a predatory offender. Hanson could face up to five years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
