Farmington superintendent is a finalist for Iowa City job

Brad Meeks.

Farmington School District superintendent Brad Meeks is one of three finalists for the superintendent's position in the Iowa City Community School District.

Meeks was interviewed April 15 in Iowa City. He was one of six candidates interviewed for the job in the approximately 11,000-student district.

The other two finalists are Elk River School District superintendent Mark Bezek and Wausau, Wis., superintendent Steve Murley. Other candidates interviewed last week were not named.

Meeks said his wife, Terri, noticed the Iowa City job posting a few weeks ago. She grew up in Iowa and Meeks was in Iowa City last year with his son, Devin, who has signed a letter of intent to swim at the University of Iowa. He liked the area, he said, and liked the idea of leading a school district in a college town. It's a situation he was in when he served as superintendent in Aberdeen, SD. Meeks left Aberdeen to come to Farmington.

"I think it's a good opportunity," Meeks said. "It's a little bit larger district. It's growing."

Meeks said he looks occasionally to see what superintendent jobs are available but said he was not aggressively seeking a new job. But Meeks said the Iowa City job was intriguing enough that he wanted to take a closer look.

"I don't have 10 applications out anywhere else. I'm at a point in my career where I can be selective," Meeks said. "Periodically I'll get an e-mail or a contact from a consultant or I'll get something in the mail. 99 percent of the time I'm not interested, but every once in a while there's something I might take a look at. This one appealed to me."

Final interviews in Iowa City are scheduled for April 20-22 and the district hopes to name a superintendent by April 26, according to Iowa City Press Citizen reporter Rob Daniel.

A report compiled by search firm Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates during the superintendent search process found that ICCSD residents are looking for a superintendent who is decisive yet willing to listen to the community, who has advanced steadily in his or her career without taking backward steps and who would remain in the Iowa City job for an extended time. The departing Iowa City superintendent held that position for 11 years before announcing in December that he planned to leave.

Meeks came to Farmington from Aberdeen in 2003. He has overseen significant growth in the district since he arrived. Farmington currently has about 6,400 students and is expected to grow to around 8,000 students within 10 years. A new high school opened last September and the district converted a former 6-7 middle school building into its fifth elementary school. The district also converted the former Farmington High School into a second middle school for students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
