Going heavy on school spirit

The next step toward promoting school spirit at Farmington High School isn't an updated mascot or cheerier cheerleaders. It's a rock.

A really big rock.

Farmington High School's Youth Development Committee is making plans to install the so-called spirit rock near the student parking lot outside Farmington High School. Students will paint the rock over the course of the year to celebrate activities going on at the school.

"The (Youth Development) Committee hopes the spirit rock will positively impact school spirit and promote the many events student organizations sponsor throughout the year," youth program coordinator Marianne Feely wrote in an item read at Monday's school board meeting.

Students have reserved a 4.79-ton rock they think is suitable for celebrating their spirit. They plan to spend the summer raising money to pay for it and and hope to unveil the boulder on the first day of school in September.
