RVES students advance to regional science fair

A student shows off his project at Riverview Elementary School’s science fair.

The awards ceremony was delayed to Monday because of last week’s bad weather, but Riverview Elementary School still held a successful science fair Feb. 20.

A total of 88 students in kindergarten through fifth grade participated in this year’s science fair, according to third grade teacher Cinda Current, who organizes the event. Of those who entered projects, 17 will go on to regional competition April 23 at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The projects ranged from shell collections and volcano demonstrations to experiments on who can hear at a higher pitch, Current said.

Andrew Cook from the Dakota County Library in Farmington was one of the judges, along with 29 students from Farmington High School.

The awards ceremony was supposed to take place Friday, Current said, but had to be postponed until Monday afternoon thanks to the snow day at the end of last week.

Students honored included third grade students Catrielle Barnett, Jaden Carlson, Lacie Cook and Anna Lorenzana; fourth grade students Morgan Benedict, Jake Beton, Adam Borntrager, Elijah Carlson, Jakob Coccarelli, Olivia Cole, Daniel Henricks, Caden Partida, Paul Radke, Jordyn Shaffer, Carli Weinberger, Brandon Wilcek and Travis Wilcek; and fifth grade students Liam Barnett, Jayna Carlson, McKenna Murphy, Carolyn Rausch.
